Fall 2008 Seminars

Communication

Communication and Conflict

Evelyn L. Ang, Lecturer

This is an introductory exploration of interpersonal conflict: its sources, consequences, and implications. Students will identify various conflict styles, including examining their own profiles with more than one type of conflict paradigm. We will explore some implications of cultural differences in communication, including how our own cultural filters may influence methods for resolving interpersonal conflict. Students will augment theory with skill-building experiences, with opportunities for learning nonviolent communication and active listening skills woven into the curriculum.Third-party interventions such as mediation, arbitration, litigation, and restorative practices will be introduced. Emphasis throughout will be on developing critical thinking skills.

Evelyn L. Ang, mediator and attorney. Executive Director of the Peace Learning Center of Milwaukee; co-founder and former Director of the Northwest Milwaukee Mediation Program and Southside Mediation; ad hoc member of the bylaws committee of the Milwaukee County Task Force on Restorative Justice; supervising mediator for Marquette Law School Mediation Clinic (Milwaukee County Courts). Evelyn has also designed and delivered training and educational courses in conflict management and dispute resolution for various groups, including Safe and Sound of Milwaukee, the National Youth Sport Program, and the Boys and Girls Clubs of Greater La Crosse. She is a graduate of UW-Milwaukee (MBA, BBA) and the Marquette University Law School, and holds a certificate from the Dispute Resolution Education Center at Marquette.
