The National Science Foundation has selected UWM to establish the Compass Scholarship Program which is designed to support talented students who intend to major in any Natural Science or Math discipline (see department Web sites listed below for details) and who demonstrate financial need. The Program is targeted to incoming 2009 freshmen and will support you throughout your UWM experience. The maximum scholarship award is $10,000 per year for up to four years. Continuation of the scholarship after each semester is contingent on successful academic performance and continued financial need. Financial need is determined annually by the Free Application for Federal Student Aid (FAFSA), so your financial awards may vary from year to year.
This scholarship opportunity provides much more than just financial support. We have planned special activities, academic support and learning opportunities for this group of scholars. For example, as a Compass Program Scholar, you will have access to tutors and mentors who will help you to get the most from your studies. You will also be able to participate in Compass seminars designed to teach you how to succeed as a student in the Natural Sciences/Mathematics. You can learn about the wide variety of careers in the Natural Sciences/Mathematics from faculty and industry professionals. We will introduce you to and encourage you to participate in professional and student organizations and in research opportunities.
For information about studies in the Natural Sciences and Mathematics at UWM, visit...Review of applications will begin in November 2008 and continue through spring 2009. Scholarship award decisions will be announced starting in December 2008 and will continue on a rolling basis. Students are strongly advised to file all UWM admissions materials (including fees, transcripts, and ACT/SAT scores) by December 1, 2008, and to file the 2009-10 FAFSA as soon as possible after January 1, 2009.
