Director's Report
Larry welcomed new members Eduardo, George, John, Tyson and Jacqueline.
He updated the committee on space and staffing changes which are being implemented. In July, he met with Dean Meadows and Provost Cheng to propose expansion of the HC. The Provost approved the plan to hire a probationary lecturer. Recruitment is underway with an application deadline of October 17th for the position to start in January. Larry also proposed development of a Teaching Fellows program in which UWM faculty members would be recruited to teach an upper level seminar in the Honors College once a year for three years. Garland 324 will be renovated to encompass an additional seminar room for the Honors College. New media equipment will be installed in 324 and 304 (the current seminar room). Additional seminar space on the third floor of Garland will provide Honors College students with a greater sense of community by enabling the HC to offer nearly all of its courses, 200 level and upper level, in one location. Currently, upper level courses are spread throughout the campus.
One hundred thirty-seven students attended the Honors College Orientation on August 30th. The scholarship awards were moved this year from the HC Graduation ceremony in May to the HC Orientation. Larry hopes that holding the scholarship award ceremony just before the start of the school year will inspire incoming freshmen to work toward scholarships for themselves. At the ceremony, $101,000 in scholarship money was awarded to 20 students. All but one donor attended the event.
Kate Coffaro reported that 55 students attended the Honors College Student Association pizza party in September, and that 12 signed up for the AIDS walk on September 29th.
Lydia Equitz held her annual writing workshop in September. Forty students attended, so she scheduled a second event for later the same week, and held a third informal session the next week. A total of 59 students participated.
Kate will present her annual scholarship workshop later in the semester.
Results of Course Review
Robin distributed the list of courses approved by the Committee in the last year, and mentioned that she has been receiving recommendations for prospective faculty members from other faculty and from students.
Freshman Admission and Honors Enrollment
The New Freshman Orientation sessions resulted in 150 students being admitted to the Honors College. Close relationships with advisors from all UWM schools and colleges has resulted in efficient recruitment procedures. The enrollment report includes all students enrolled in the Honors College as of the Enrollment Services final drop date, plus students enrolled in nonseminar options.
The meeting was adjourned at 9:30 a.m.
