The meeting was called to order at 9:05 a.m. The minutes of the 9/28/2007 meeting were approved as distributed.

  1. Report of Bradley Professor Search Committee - Lydia Equitz, a member of the Committee, reported that there were 37 candidates for the position, the Committee met three times and narrowed the pool down to 6 people, after which phone interviews were conducted. After an on-campus interview, the position was offered to Joseph Cannon.
  2. Election of Chair for 2008-09 - Lee Ann Garrison was nominated and elected to the chairmanship for next year.
  3. Distribution of Spring 2008 Enrollment Report - Robin Weigert distributed a written report and answered several questions from Committee members. The Honors College continues to grow in all areas, including H200 classes, upper level classes, and independent study options.
  4. Honors College Student Association - Kate Coffaro reported that the HCSA book sale on March 12th and 13th generated $286 in income; and that uncontested elections will take place on April 15th and 16th.
  5. Director's Report - Larry Baldassaro gave his final report to the Committee as Director of the Honors College. He distributed a brief written report on the changes which have occurred in his time as Director from 1995 to 2008. The name changed from "Honors Program" to "Honors College" which allowed for enhanced recruitment and greatly increased fund-raising and which was a true reflection of the reality of the program which has its own admissions criteria, advisors, graduation requirements, and faculty. He noted that the increase in the number of graduates has been a direct result of the excellent advising provided by our two full-time advisors, and mentioned that administrative support (from the Chancellor down) has been critical to the continued success of the Honors College.

He noted that Alan Singer has been hired after a national search to fill the new Lecturer in History position.

The Honors College acquired Garland 326 as an additional seminar room and it, along with Garland 304, has been outfitted with new media equipment as of 4/10/2008.

He asked the members of the Committee to be especially vigilant in the future to safeguard the excellence of the program. Should administrators want the Honors College to grow, it should not be at the expense of the seminar-style, 15 students per class system that has served our students so well up to now. He envisions a time when the Honors College is housed in its own building, with more offices, meeting rooms and classrooms.

He proposed a system called Honors College Teaching Fellows, which would enlist current UWM faculty to teach one class per year over a three-year span. He would like to see UWM employ a National Scholarship Coordinator who would assist students in obtaining Rhodes, Mellon, and other large national scholarships.

He also proposed an Honors College Recruitment Day for area high school juniors.

Finally, additional scholarship funding should be sought to increase the attractiveness of the HC. Scholarship money distributed in the 2008-09 school year will total $124,000. This includes ten Senior scholarships at $5,000 each; 10 Junior scholarships at $4,000 each, five Soph. scholarships at $2,000 each; $12,000 in Study Abroad funding; the Baird scholarship for minority students - $10,000; and the KleinOsowski scholarship $2,000. Four committees are currently reviewing scholarship applications.

Larry gave thanks to outgoing members of the HCAC for their commitment to the ideals of Honors education and their hard work on behalf of the Honors College.

  6. Director Search & Screen Committee - Lee Ann Garrison reported that the Committee has met once and has several meetings scheduled for the near future. The applications received are all excellent.

The meeting was adjourned at 9:40 a.m.
