College of Letters and Science Faculty Document No. 774
January 31, 2008
Recommendations of the L&S Academic Policies and Curriculum Committee to Approve Additional Ways to Meet the L&S Foreign Language Requirement
Recommendation:
That the L&S Faculty add to the implementation provisions for the foreign language requirement the following option for satisfying that requirement:
for languages not taught at UWM, students may submit documentation of an intermediate-level score on an ACTFL exam in the language that has been administered by a certified ACTFL examiner.
Rationale:
An increasing number of students who have native fluency in uncommonly-taught languages have been requesting certification of completion of the foreign language requirement. Such students who choose to attend UWM should not be penalized for their selection of the College of Letters and Science at UWM as their institution of higher learning. Therefore, additional ways of satisfying the foreign language requirement are needed. The option listed above ensures that the integrity of the College's language requirement is maintained while still allowing students who speak other languages to have their skills certified.
