Recommendation of the L&S Academic Policies and Curriculum Committee to Revise the Second Language Baccalaureate Degree Policy Statement

Recommendation:

That the L&S Faculty recommend to the Dean amending the second baccalaureate degree statement (Fac. Doc. No. 51 approved May 14, 1968; amended by Fac. Doc. No. 216, approved April 29, 1976) as follows:

A student who holds one baccalaureate degree may be admitted to work toward a second baccalaureate degree if a recommendation from the department in which s/he plans to major is approved by the Associate Dean for Student Academic Services and Special Programs. This option is especially useful for a student who wishes to change her/his field of concentration for graduate or professional study. A candidate for a second baccalaureate degree must satisfy all requirements for a degree in Letters and Science (may be by transfer). In addition, the student must complete at least 30 credits in residence beyond those required for at UWM after the date on which the first degree is awarded. Twenty of these credits must be in upper-division courses and 24 must be in Letters and Science courses. The student must satisfy current degree requirements for a major.

Rationale:

Recently, a student who earned his first degree from the Peck School of the Arts after taking more than the minimum number of credits required requested that credits he had taken in L&S beyond the minimum number required during the course of completing requirements for his first degree be counted toward completion of the "30 credits in residence beyond those required for the first degree." The intention of the L&S Faculty in setting the 30 residence credits requirement was that students would take those 30 credits after completion and posting of the first degree. The recommended language change in the policy clarifies this requirement. In addition, the committee is recommending editorial changes that will remove sexist language.
