Academic Planning and Governance Committee
Annual Report
2006-2007

The Academic Planning and Governance Committee (AP&GC) held seven meetings during the year to carry out its functions as authorized by L&S Faculty Document No. 693. The Committee met on the following dates: September 28, October 12, and November 2, 2006; February 14, March 7, May 9, and May 16, 2007.

Procedural Matters

The activities of the Committee included the following procedural matters:

  1. elected Glen Fredlund as Chair of the Committee for 2006-2007;
  2. noted that the current chair, David Heathcote, will serve as Co-Chair of the Committee for 2006-2007 ;
  3. recommended to the Dean that David Mulroy be appointed as Parliamentarian for Faculty meetings;
  4. set the dates (October 26, 2006; March 29, 2007) and agendas for meetings of the L&S Faculty;
  5. conducted the nomination process for L&S Faculty and Graduate School committees;
  6. elected Peter Geissinger as Chair of the Committee for 2007-2008.
Legislative Matters

The Committee made the following recommendations:

  • to modify its charter to require that the new chair be elected from among the members who have completed their first year on the committee and that the previous year's chair serve as the co-chair of the committee.
  • That the L&S Approval Matrix, adopted by the L&S Faculty on April 10, 2000 and revised on February 8, 2001, be revised to reflect the new committee structures as indicated below.
    • changing the Course & Curriculum Committee (C&CC) and the Graduate Program Committee (GPC) to the Academic Policies & Curriculum Committee (AP&CC)
    • changing the Academic Planning Committee(APC) to the Academic Planning & Governance Committee (AP&GC)
    • clarifying that "I" means "information only.

The Committee responded to requests from the Dean for its advice on the following matters:

Other Business

The Committee met with Alice Gillam, Chuck Schuster, and Margaret Mika to discuss English competency.

The Committee met with Associate Dean Tom O'Bryan to discuss the L&S portion of a proposal that was submitted by campus administration to the Sloane Foundation.

Committee members met with Cindy Walker, chair of the subcommittee on the evaluation of administrators, to discuss the role of the APGC in the review process. The APGC distributed the evaluation reports to departments.

Committee members met with the Associate Deans to get their views of the College's most pressing hiring needs.

Dean Richard Meadows met with the Committee in September and February to discuss the budget situation in the State and at UWM.
