- Call to Order - The Chair, Peter Geissinger, called the meeting to order at 9:40 a.m. in Garland 104.
- Special Order of Business: Discussion with Associate Deans - Each associate dean outlined priorities for hiring for Fall 2009.
Social Sciences -- Rodney Swain
Associate Dean Swain distributed a list of hiring priorities. (A copy is attached to the original of these minutes.) Associate Dean Swain stated that this was not the most auspicious time for new positions, given the uncertainty of the state budget and all of the special DIN and WIBHT positions for which recruitment must be done. He said the College has the following obligations to meet for Fall 2009 (these are not ranked in any particular order):
- Women's Studies (Feminist theory/methodology), open rank. A search is currently in process. If the search fails, this recruitment should be re-opened.
- Economics (Development Economics--Econometrics), Assistant Professor. A search is currently in process. If the search fails, this recruitment should be re-opened.
- JMC (Media Studies), Assistant Professor, and two Lecturers. Searches are currently in process. If any of these searches fail, the recruitment should be re-opened.
- Psychology (Neuroscience), Assistant Professor. The College is committed to this position as part of a counter-offer.
- Political Science (Methodologist), Assistant Professor. DIN hire (UROP).
- History, Assistant Professor. DIN hire (UROP).
- Clinical Psychology, Assistant Professor. DIN hire (UROP).
- Psychology (Cognitive Neuroscience), Assistant Professor. WIBHT hire (1 of 3) Biomed cluster.
The following two positions were identified as equal priorities:
- Africology (Political Economist), Assistant or Associate Professor.
- Anthropology (Biological Anthropology-Human Biology), Assistant Professor.
Natural Sciences -- Marija Gajdardziska-Josifovska
Associate Dean G-J distributed a list of hiring priorities. (A copy is attached to the original of these minutes.) In addition to 14 DIN and WIBHT positions, the following priorities for Fall, 2009 were indicated:
- Geosciences (Glacial/Quaternary Geologist), Assistant Professor/Associate Professor. An offer has been made. If this search fails, it should be re-opened.
- Geosciences (Isotope Geochemist), Assistant or Associate Professor.
- Physics (Experimental Optics), Assistant Professor.
- Chemistry (Inorganic Chemistry), Assistant Professor.
- Mathematical Sciences (Computational Mathematics), Assistant or Associate Professor.
- Biological Sciences (Molecular Environmental Physiologist), Assistant Professor.
Humanities -- Charles Schuster
Associate Dean Schuster set the following priorities for Fall 2009:
- Portuguese-The search currently in process will probably fail. If so, it should be re-opened next year.
- English (Digital Humanities), DIN (UROP).
- If there is a new Linguistics Department, hiring in this area would be a priority.
- Art History (Film Historian), Assistant Professor.
- English (whichever position they want to fill), Assistant Professor.
- Communication (Inter-cultural), Assistant Professor. Dean Schuster believes that the College is obliged to fill this position because it was part of the doctoral program implementation plan.
- Religious Studies (South Asian Religions or East Asian Religions). This would be a complicated and difficult hire because it must be done in conjunction with a department. Dean Schuster would love to see a joint hire with Philosophy.
- Jewish Studies. A position has been proposed to the Bader Foundation. This would be another very important, but complicated, hire.
- Philosophy, especially someone who could be jointly affiliated with Religious Studies.
- Italian, Assistant Professor.
- Another wildcard is that the Center for 21st Century Studies has to hire a new Director. This may be an outside search. The new Director would probably be in the area of English or History.
Members thanked the associate deans for taking time to attend the meeting.
- Procedural Matters
Election of Chair for 2008-2009-Joyce Kirk was elected enthusiastically and unanimously. As mandated by policy, the outgoing chair, Peter Geissinger, will serve as the Vice Chair. - Automatic Consent: Approval of Minutes #7 (March 24, 2008) - There were no objections to the minutes of the previous meeting; they stand approved.
- Old Business
- Spousal and Target-of-Opportunity Hiring - Peter has not yet written up a report on this topic but plans to do so in the near future.
- Review of Centers' Reports - Peter will put together the information people sent to him and will request additional information from the Centers.
- New Business
- Position Requests for New Faculty in 2009-2010 - Three subcommittees were formed (natural science, humanities, social science); it was agreed that the subcommittees would bring their recruitment rankings to the next meeting, scheduled for Monday, May 5, at 9:30 a.m., HLT 241.
- Adjournment - The meeting was adjourned at 11:10 a.m.
Respectfully submitted,
