- Call to Order - The chair, Jeffrey Oxford called the meeting to order at 9:01 a.m. in HLT 241. Committee members introduced themselves to the new student member, Daniel Carpenter II.
It was moved, seconded, and approved to suspend the agenda to accommodate guests.
V.C.1. It was moved and seconded to recommend to the Dean approval of the following course:
Kathy Miller-Dillon and Gwynne Kennedy responded to questions. The motion was approved.Wmns 302 Gendered Bodies: (Subtitle) (new) -- salmon V.A.1. It was moved and seconded to recommend to the Dean approval of the proposed changes to the Microbiology Major. Mark McBride was available to answer questions. The motion was approved. V.B.1. It was moved and seconded to recommend to the Dean approval of the following course:
Joe Peschio was available to answer questions. The motion was approved with the following two contingencies: 1) the syllabus should indicate that the last exam is turned in during the scheduled final exam time and 2) the section of the syllabus where discussion of the grading break-down occurs needs to be corrected so that it matches the percentages that are listed above it.Russian 310 Advanced Russian Reading and Conversation: (Subtitle) (new) It was moved and seconded to recommend to the Dean approval of the following course:
The motion was approved.Russian 311 Contemporary Russian Language: (Subtitle) (new) V.B.3. It was moved and seconded to recommend to the Dean approval of the following courses for international status:
Margaret Atherton responded to questions. The motion was approved for both courses, the first, unanimously, the second, on a vote of 6-2 (6 in favor, 2 opposed).Philos 355 Political Philosophy Philos 435 Existentialism V.B.1. It was moved and seconded to recommend to the Dean approval of the following course:
John Gleeson responded to questions. It was pointed out that the first syllabus currently says there are two textbooks, but three are listed. This inconsistency needs to be corrected. On the second syllabus, the syllabus needs to be cleaned up a bit before it is given to students. For example, the section called "Place of Course in Department's Curriculum" should be removed. Also, the required research paper should be reflected somewhere in the grading section. With these friendly suggestions, the motion was approved.Celtic 350 Advanced Topics in Celtic Studies: (Subtitle) (new) V.C.1. It was moved and seconded to recommend to the Dean approval of the following course:
Rachel Buff responded to questions. The motion was approved.Ethnic 275 Queer Migrations (new, GER-HU, CD) It was moved and seconded to recommend to the Dean approval of the following courses:
Jeff Smith attended the meeting to respond to questions. Committee member David Pritchard also provided additional information when needed.
Tom O'Bryan questioned whether this course should be considered a repeat of 460. Is it essentially the same course? Is the same syllabus being used? The same textbook? Jeff Smith and David Pritchard replied that they could not answer these questions about 460 because they only had the syllabus for the new JMC 111 course. They thought the course should be judged on the syllabus provided for 111. After considerable discussion, the motion was approved.JMC 111 Gender and the Media (new, GER-HU) JMC 112 Global Media (new) -- The motion was approved JMC 113 Internet Culture (new) -- The motion was approved JMC 114 Media and Popular Culture (new) -- The motion was approved JMC 115 Introduction to Media and Politics (new, GER-SS) -- The motion was approved JMC 116 Journalism, Documentary, and Democracy (new) -- The motion was approved JMC 204 Integrated Reporting for Journalism and Documentary (new) -- The motion was approved with the contingency that the prereq include being a declared "minor." JMC 207 Introduction to Strategic Communication (new) -- The Department of Communication occasionally offers a topics course on "Strategic Communication in Organizations." They have been discussing with JMC how best to handle the overlap involved with the term "strategic communication." They have not yet reached an agreement, but the Communication Department agreed to allow the proposed courses and other changes to go forward with the understanding that all business would be stopped if a mutually agreed upon solution could not be found. The motion was approved with the contingency that the issue over the term be resolved to everyone's satisfaction. JMC 307 Strategic Communication Writing and Production (new) -- The motion was approved JMC 320 Print and Online News (new) -- The motion was approved with the contingency that the following be added to the prereq "grade of C or better in JMC 204." JMC 332 Introduction to Digital Documentary (new) -- The motion was approved with the contingency that the prereq include "declared JMC major or minor." JMC 445 Health and the Media (# chg to 645, prereq, level) -- The motion was approved JMC 505 Research for Strategic Communication (title, descrp, prereq) -- The motion was approved with the contingency that the syllabus be changed to reflect grad status. JMC 532 Documentary Production (new) -- The motion was approved contingent upon clarification from the department about whether or not the course should carry grad status. In addition, the prereq needs to include a statement about being a declared JMC major or minor. JMC 542 Television News Reporting (# chg to 342, prereq, level, crs) -- The motion was approved JMC 604 Advanced Integrated Reporting for Journalism and Documentary (new) -- The motion was approved JMC 642 Television Newsroom Management (#chg to 544, descrp, prereq, crs) -- The motion was approved with the contingency that the following be added to the prereq: "declared JMC major or minor; grade of C or better in ..." V.C.2. It was moved and seconded to recommend to the Dean approval of the proposed changes to the Journalism and Mass Communication major Tom voiced concern that there was no document showing how students under the old major requirements could complete those requirements given the deletion of some of the required courses. Dave Pritchard responded that the Department is working on a document that will provide that information.
The motion was approved with the contingency that the Department's transition plan be developed and submitted for approval at the next L&S curriculum committee meeting. If a plan is not approved at that meeting, the major change proposal will be pulled from the campus APCC agenda.
V.C.3. It was moved and seconded to recommend to the Dean approval of the proposed changes to the Journalism and Mass Communication Minor The motion was approved.
V.C.4. It was moved and seconded to recommend to the Dean approval of the request to change the name of the Journalism and Mass Communication curricular area to Journalism and Media Communication. The motion was approved.
It was moved, seconded, and approved to return to the order of the agenda.
- Procedural Matters
- Annual Report -- It was moved and seconded to recommend to the Faculty approval of the 2006- 07 L&S AP&CC Annual Report. The motion was approved.
- Spanish M.A. Implementation Plan - It was moved and seconded that the committee reaffirm its previous recommendation to the Dean that the Spanish M.A. Implementation Plan be approved. The motion was approved.
- Automatic Consent -
- Approval of Minutes #2, 2007-2008 (September 18, 2007) -- Kris Surerus pointed out that she had not previously chaired the extraordinary accommodations subcommittee. The minutes were amended to remove that statement and then approved as amended.
- Special Listing Requests - There were no objections to any of the Special Listing Requests; they stand approved.

It was moved and seconded to recommend to the Dean approval of the JMC 201 CAR form. Tom O'Bryan expressed concern about the prerequisite containing two options that were representative of different levels of competence. It was moved and seconded to amend the motion to recommend approval contingent on ensuring that the prerequisite was logically consistent. The amendment was approved, and the motion as amended was approved.
Tom O'Bryan expressed concern over the deletion of courses required in the old major before the Committee had seen a plan for accommodating students in the old major.
