Vytaras Brazauskas and Eric Key attended the meeting to respond to questions. They brought to the meeting a proposal to create two courses, Math Stat 592 and 593, instead of just the one course. However, new CAR forms had not been created for the proposed 592 and 593 courses. After much discussion, a motion was made, seconded, and approved to table the course.Math Stat 592 Professional Development Seminar (new) VI.A.1. Bernard Perley attended the meeting on behalf of Cheryl Ajirotutu, who could not be there. There were concerns about the overlap statement, and members felt that a statement saying that the course had a service learning component should go into the course description. With the contingency that the course get checked out again by Fred Eckman of Linguistics for overlap, and that the course description include a statement about the course having a service learning component, the motion was approved.Anthro 360 Introduction to Linguistic Anthropology (# chg to 105, prereq, level, GER/CD) V.B.1. - Discussion Items
- Courses not offered in many years - Connie explained to the committee that there are numerous courses on the books that have not been offered in many years. Because these courses continue to show up in the catalog, it presents a false picture of a department's array of course offerings. Also, some departments are running out of numbers for new courses. Should this issue be brought to the faculty so they can decide whether or not these courses should "automatically" be deleted after a certain amount of time? The committee suggested that Connie start this process by drafting a policy and creating a list of courses that have not been offered in 10 years.
- Enrollment in classes without rooms - Connie asked the committee their thoughts about how best to handle classes that end up not being assigned a room after Allen Meier makes his room assignments. Should students be allowed to enroll only in courses that have rooms? The committee suggested that an analysis be done that shows how rooms are presently assigned. Is the present system equitable? Should areas that have shown a large amount of growth get additional rooms?
- Extraordinary Accommodations - Connie explained that the subcommittee that looked at this issue a few years ago has to be reconstituted. She said she would contact the old members to find out if they would again join the subcommittee. Kris Surerus agreed to chair the subcommittee this year.

- Discussion about determining language competency in languages not offered at UWM.
Tom is dealing with two students who would like to meet the foreign language requirement in a language that is not offered at UWM. One of the students has found a person at the University of Kansas who is willing to test the student in the language. If the student is not allowed to use the results of the test taken at the University of Kansas to meet the language requirement, he wants the requirement waived. Tom explained that UW Madison allows students to meet their language requirement only in languages that they can test within the university. However, Madison offers many more languages than UWM. Tom's question to the committee is, should students be allowed to demonstrate proficiency in a language not offered by UWM by testing at another university? If so, whose responsibility is it to find an appropriate testing place?
When UWM changed its degree requirements in 1998, Tom believes the implementation document said that the requirement could be met by completing two years of language in high school, by going to a high school that is taught in a language that is foreign to the student, or via the placement test. The committee decided to table the issue until the implementation document could be consulted.
