- Call to Order - Last year's co-chair, Michael Weinert, called the meeting to order at 9:02 p.m. in HLT 241. Jeffrey Oxford, chair of the committee, arrived a few minutes later and took over the meeting.
It was moved, seconded, and approved to suspend the agenda to accommodate guests.
V.A.1 It was moved and seconded to recommend to the Dean approval of the following new course: MathStat 592 Professional Development Seminar (new)
Eric Key and Vytaras Brazauskas responded to questions about the course. Tom O'Bryan had questions about the course being variable credit. He asked what the workload difference would be for a student signing up for 1 credit vs. 2 credits, 2 credits vs. 4 credits, etc.. Committee members also questioned why the course was set up to be retakable but was not designed to be a topics course. In addition, members continued to be concerned that the new course appeared to be an actuarial "test prep" course that reviewed material rather than presenting new material (this is the main reason the course was tabled at the last meeting). Eric and Vytaras said that UWM math majors would probably take the course only once for one credit. They envisioned non-UWM math majors repeating the course for additional credit.
After much discussion, the course was tabled. The committee asked the Math department to figure out if two separate courses are needed instead of one (one course for UWM Math majors, one for non-UWM Math majors) or if the course should be made into a variable topics course. In addition, because the current course description makes the course sound like it is a "review"course, a new course description will have to be written that makes it clear that new material will be presented. Finally, a friendly suggestion was made that the math department look at other programs across the country to find out how many offer this type of course, whether or not other math programs require this kind of course, etc., and then bring that information back to the committee.VI.A.1. It was moved and seconded to recommend to the Dean approval of the following new course: Astron 185 Astronomy for Pre-Education Majors (new).
Jean Creighton was available for questions. The motion was approved.VI.A.3. It was moved and seconded to recommend to the Dean approval of the proposed changes to the Ph.D. in Geosciences.
Tim Grundl and Doug Cherkauer responded to questions about the Geosciences program change. Peter Sands said there were two sentences in the program proposal that made it unclear whether or not an outside advisor was required on a student's doctoral committee. One sentence (under the justification section) said "This change eliminates the rather artificial requirement that an outside advisor must be included on the student's doctoral committee," while another (under the New Copy" section of the form, under "doctoral committee") said "...and at least one member from outside the student's field of specialization." The committee approved the program change recommendation with the contingency that the justification section be changed to match the new copy.VI.B.1. It was moved and seconded to recommend to the Dean approval of the following course: Italian 729 Major Film Directors: (Subtitle) (new)
Robin Pickering-Iazzi attended the meeting to respond to questions. The motion was approved.VI.B.2 It was moved and seconded to recommend to the Dean approval of the proposed changes to the Comparative Study of Religion Major.
The committee had a few questions about the proposal. First, the change under #4 says that the revised CSR major will "require students to complete courses in at least three different departments." However, the new copy section of the proposal directs students to "Select...courses, from at least two different departments." The committee asked for clarification about which statement is correct. In addition, point #2 in the justification section says that "the new focus of the major does not require comparative studies, although students will have the option of that approach." The committee wondered whether the proposed changes should wait until after the name change to "Religious Studies" has been complete so that the name of the major matches the content. Due to these concerns, the program change was tabled.VI.B.4. It was moved and seconded to recommend to the Dean approval of the proposed changes to the M.A. in Communication.
Mike Allen and Nancy Burrell were in attendance to respond to questions. Jeffrey Oxford pointed out that the Communication Department's proposal to eliminate the comprehensive exam option may be in conflict with the following Graduate School policy that is posted on the Graduate School's web-site:"In order to receive a master's degree, you must show the ability to integrate your knowledge of your discipline through one or more of the following means, as determined by your graduate program unit: An oral and/or written comprehensive examination; Defense of a thesis; A comprehensive final project, paper, exhibition, or integrative course."
Given this information, Mike Allen withdrew the program change.
VI.C.1. It was moved and seconded to recommend to the Faculty and the Dean approval of the proposed changes to the Peace Studies Certificate, which include a change in the name of the certificate.
Rob Ricigliano attended the meeting to answer questions. Committee members asked that the following sentence be deleted from the program change form because they felt that this information was best conveyed to students via advising sessions: "Students are encouraged to apply no more than nine credits in their major toward the certificate program." In addition, members pointed out that the new name "Peace Studies and Conflict Resolution" was not reflected in the new copy; they asked that this be corrected. The motion was approved with the contingency that these two items be changed or corrected.VI.C.2. It was moved and seconded to recommend to the Dean approval of the proposed changes to the Admissions Process for the Major and Minor in Journalism and Mass Communication.
Jeffrey Smith attended the meeting to respond to questions. Tom O'Bryan questioned the non-specificity of the proposed admission criteria-shouldn't some kind of minimum standard be developed? Jay Moore wondered if the vagueness of the admissions criteria might create legal problems down the road. Jeffrey Smith responded by emphasizing that the department would mainly look at academic performance in making their admissions decisions. However, he said that the department wanted some flexibility to consider other factors, as well, when needed. Tom suggested removing the following sentence from the program change form because he thought reserving admission spaces for students was an internal departmental matter: "Approximately three spots will be reserved for students who appeal the admissions committee's decision or who are at the top of the alternative list." Finally, Tom said that admissions appeals would not go to an L&S Associate Dean. Therefore, the following sentence should be deleted "Final appeals can be made to the associate dean for social sciences within ten working days of e-mail notification of decisions by the appeals committee." With the contingency that these two sentences be removed, the committee approved the motion.VI.C.3 It was moved and seconded to recommend to the Faculty approval of the authorization to implement the M.A. in Women's Studies.
Gwynne Kennedy and Kathy Miller-Dillon were in attendance to answer questions. Tom O'Bryan was concerned about the fact that Women's Studies said in the proposal that the program needed two additional joint-appointment faculty positions. The committee approved the motion to recommend with the contingency that the request for these positions be prefaced with the words "While planning for future growth, Women's Studies anticipates needing...."It was moved, seconded, and approved to return to the order of the agenda.
