  1. Call to Order - The chair, Jeffrey Oxford called the meeting to order at 9:30 a.m. in HLT 241. Committee members introduced themselves to the new student member, Stephani Klomsten.

It was moved, seconded, and approved to suspend the agenda to accommodate the guest.

VI.A.1. It was moved and seconded to recommend to the Dean approval of the following course:
Anthro 380   Anthropological Application of GIS (new)
Brian Nicholls was in attendance to answer questions. Tom O'Bryan asked whether this course would go on the L&S breadth list under natural science or social science. Connie Jo said "neither," because the course is skills-based. Tom asked whether the course would affect the structure of the Anthropology major. Brian said it would not because it is an elective course. The motion was approved.

It was moved, seconded, and approved to return to the order of the agenda.

  2. Procedural Matters
    1. Proposed Meeting Schedule for Spring - Kim explained that Daniel Carpenter II was not able to meet during the proposed time (9:30 a.m. on Thursdays) because he had a class. Also, Susanne Lenné Jones said that her schedule had changed slightly and she wondered if the committee could meet at 9:00 a.m. on Thursday mornings rather than 9:30 a.m. Because there was no other time-slot that worked, the committee decided to meet at 9:00 a.m. on the following dates: February 14, March 13, April 24 and May 22 (if needed). Jay Moore suggested that we contact the Student Association to ask for a replacement for Daniel. Kim agreed to do so.

  5. Old Business
    1. Policies
      1. Language Competency in Languages Not Offered at UWM - It was moved, seconded, and approved to reconsider the committee's recommendation on alternative ways to meet the L&S Foreign Language Requirement. A revised proposal to accept only proficiency exams administered by ACTFL-certified faculty members was moved, seconded and approved.
    2. Discussion Items
      1. Courses Not Offered in Many Years - Connie reported that many departments already had responded to her query about what to do with courses that were not offered in many years with the result that many courses will be inactivated or deleted.
      2. Assessment Subcommittee Draft Report - It was moved and seconded to forward to the L&S Faculty for discussion the document created by the Assessment Subcommittee with the contingency that Connie remove the editorial comments, questions, etc. The motion was approved.
      3. Extraordinary Accommodations - Connie said that she is now in possession of Kris Surerus' file; dealing with this issue is on the list of things to do.
      4. Office Hours - The committee discussed whether it would made sense to create a policy on office hours. Should faculty be mandated to hold a set number of office hours or at least strongly encouraged to do so? It quickly became apparent that committee members held a variety of perspectives on this issue. Everybody seemed to agree that faculty and staff should make themselves available to students. However, some believed it was adequate to be available "by appointment" while others favored listing specific hours. The committee moved on to the remaining business on the agenda because there appeared to be no consensus on the issue.
