Academic Planning and Governance Committee Annual Report
2005-2006

The Academic Planning and Governance Committee (AP&GC) held seven meetings during the year to carry out its functions as authorized by L&S Faculty Document No. 693. The Committee met on the following dates: September 29 and November 17, 2005; February 2, March 9, April 13, May 18, and June 2, 2006.

Procedural Matters

The activities of the Committee included the following procedural matters:

  1. elected David Healthcote as Chair of the Committee for 2005-2006;

  2. elected Kathleen Dolan as Co-Chair of the Committee;

  3. recommended to the Dean that David Mulroy be appointed as Parliamentarian for Faculty meetings;

  4. set the dates (October 13 & December 15, 2005; April 6, 2006) and agendas for meetings of the L&S Faculty;

  5. conducted the nomination process for L&S Faculty and Graduate School committees;

  6. elected Glen Fredlund as Chair of the Committee for 2006-2007.

Legislative Matters

The Committee made the following recommendation, with the concurrence of the Academic Policies and Curriculum Committee:

to modify its charter to indicate that it was responsible for all nominations for Graduate School committee service. (Nominations for those committees had been the charge of the AP&CC.)

The Committee agreed to confirm with the Graduate School that it had no objection to this change, after which a formal recommendation to modify its charter would be prepared.

The Committee responded to requests from the Dean for its advice on the following matters:

Based on curricular needs, the natural science rankings were as follows:

  2. Physics: Experimental Physicist Optics/Biophysics
  3. Biological Sciences: Evolutionary Population Geneticist
  4. Chemistry: Chemistry Education Research (CER)/Director of General Chemistry
  5. Mathematical Sciences: Stochastic Analysis
  6. Biological Sciences: Molecular Environmental Physiologist
  7. Mathematical Sciences: Applied/Computational Mathematics
  8. Biological Sciences: Eukaryotic Genomicist
  9. Geosciences: Geochemist
  10. Mathematical Sciences: Algebraic Geometry
  11. Physics: Theoretical Particle Physics
  12. Mathematical Sciences: Statistics
  13. Geosciences: Glacial/Quaternary Geologist

Humanities Priority Rankings

Because one of the subcommittee members was overseas and another was unavailable to meet, the committee reported to the Dean the comments offered by subcommittee members but did not make any specific recommendations.

Social Sciences Priority Ranking

  1. Geography: Remote Sensing or Department Priority (Heynen departure)
  2. Women's Studies/Political Science: Comparative Politics
  3. Anthropology: Museum Studies
  4. Psychology/Biological Sciences: Neuroscience
  5. Geography: Remote Sensing or Department Priority (Heynen departure)
  6. Journalism and Mass Communication: Media and Society
  7. Psychology: Applied Behavior Analysis
  8. Women's Studies/Communication
  9. Anthropology: Archaeologist with specialty in paleobotanical analysis
  10. Geography: GIS/Urban Water Resources

Ultimately, the College opened recruitment for the following positions:

  1. Chemistry & Biochemistry: Bioanalytical Chemistry
  2. Physics: Experimental Biophysics
  3. Mathematical Sciences: Stochastic Analysis
  4. Mathematical Sciences: Actuarial Science (Donor Commitment)

Humanities

  1. English: Director of Composition
  2. Philosophy: Modern European Philosophy
  3. English: Creative Writing - Fiction
  4. Communication: Rhetorical & Public Communication
  5. Spanish & Portuguese: U.S. Latino/Latin American

Social Sciences

  1. Geography: Urban Physical Geography
  2. Political Science/Women's Studies: Comparative Politics
  3. Psychology: Clinical Psychology
  4. Geography: Historical Cartography

Other Business

The Committee sent a recommendation to the University Committee to establish University Distinguished Teaching, Research, and Service Professorships.

Committee members met with the Associate Deans to get their views of the College's most pressing hiring needs.

Dean Richard Meadows met with the Committee in September, April, and June to discuss the budget situation in the State and at UWM.
