VI.C.2. & 3.   Gwynne Kennedy and Kathy Miller-Dillon attended the meeting to address questions concerning Women's Studies' research requirement proposal and related program change. With the stipulation that wording on the research proposal be changed from "assessment of course objectives" to "assessment of major objectives," and contingent upon correcting the total number of credits to complete the major from 30-31 to 33-34 on the Program Change Form, it was moved, seconded, and approved to recommend to the Dean approval of the Women's Studies Research Requirement Proposal and the Recommendation to Revise the Requirements of the Major in Women's Studies.
VI.C.5. & 6.   Sunwoong Kim attended the meeting to address questions concerning the Economics Department research requirement proposal and the related program change proposal. Sunwoong was asked to revise the research proposal by indicating more clearly under #2 that students' independent research will consist of a review of the literature and, for students who chose to conduct original research, that replication of an existing study will be allowed. He was asked to rewrite #5 to indicate how evaluation of student projects ties back to an assessment of the economics major. Finally, it was pointed out that the addition of the research requirement independent study course changes the minimum number of major credits from 30 to 31. This change needed to be made on the Program Change Form. The research proposal and program change form were tabled with the understanding that revised documents would be circulated by e-mail to committee members for vote. The revised documents subsequently were approved.
VI.D.1.       It was moved and seconded to recommend to the Dean approval of the following Service Learning CARs:
L&S Hum 298   Lower-Division Service Learning in the Humanities (new)
L&S Hum 398 Upper-Division Service Learning in the Humanities (new)
L&S NS 298 Lower-Division Service Learning in the Natural Sciences (new)
L&S NS 398 Upper-Division Service Learning in the Natural Sciences (new)
L&S SS 298 Lower-Division Service Learning in the Social Sciences (new)
L&S SS 398 Upper-Division Service Learning in the Social Sciences (new)
Greg Jay explained that the Service Learning Program was seeking a credit-generating vehicle that could allow students to continue working in an agency beyond the first semester. Committee members raised a number of questions about the general proposal as well as about using the L&S Divisional curricular areas for these courses. The following are some of the concerns expressed:
    • Should there be a limit on the number of credits students can earn in service learning courses?
    • Shouldn't service learning be one of several tools used in the context of a regular course rather than as a course in its own right?
    • What would be the academic content of a general service learning course?
    • Given that the faculty has primary responsibility for the curriculum, shouldn't service learning courses be offered under department curricular codes where there will be better faculty oversight?
    • Would use of the independent study course be a better vehicle for these experiences because there are more levels of approval required for individual projects?
    • Is there really a significant difference between an independent service learning course and an internship?
    • What is the distinction between lower-division and upper-division courses?
After a lengthy discussion, the motion failed on a voice vote.

It was moved, seconded, and approved to return to the order of the agenda.
