Meeting: Wednesday, November 9, 2006, 3:30 p.m.
Holton Hall 241

Minutes No. 4

Present: Kathryn Dindia, Douglas Howland, Connie Jo, Jay Moore, Jeffrey Oxford, Peter Sands, Charles Schuster, Kristene Surerus, Michael Weinert
Excused:   John Berges, Tom O'Bryan, Samantha Prahl, Steven Redd
Guests: Kenneth Bendiner, Charles Fink, Glen Fredlund, Mark McBride, James Mileham, Kim Romenesko, Gabrielle Verdier

  1. Call to Order - The chair, Kathryn Dindia, called the meeting to order at 3:32 p.m. in HLT 241.

It was moved, seconded, and approved to suspend the agenda to accommodate guests.

III.B.2.       Recommendation to Revise the Requirements of the Art History Major - Kenneth Bendiner was in attendance to answer questions about the Art History proposal to revise its major requirements to incorporate the research requirement. Because there were no objections to this automatic approval item, it stands approved.
VI.A.2.     Recommendation to Revise the Requirements of the CES Major - Glen Fredlund attended the meeting to respond to question about the proposed changes to revise the requirements of the CES Major. On behalf of Tom O'Bryan, who was unable to be at the meeting, Kathryn Dindia asked Glen if CES will be able to assess its majors with most of the research courses outside of its control. Glen agreed that CES was giving up some control by providing students with so many research course options, but he said the CES advisory committee felt it was important to provide an opportunity for students to double major in CES and another field without having to complete two research requirements. Glen believes, however, that most students will meet the requirement by taking CES 490. It was moved, seconded, and approved to recommend to the Dean approval of the recommendation to revise the requirements of the CES major.
VI.D.1.b.   Charles Fink and Mark McBride attended the meeting to respond to questions about the Biological Sciences research requirement proposal. Mark pointed out that Bio Sci 698 and 671 were supposed to have been included among the research course options for the biological sciences major. With the stipulation that Bio Sci 698 and 671be added to the list of courses that will fulfill the biological sciences research option, it was moved, seconded, and approved to recommend to the Dean approval of the biological sciences research requirement proposal.
VI.D.1.e.   Mark McBride addressed questions about the microbiology research proposal. It was moved, seconded, and approved to recommend to the Dean approval of the microbiology research requirement proposal.
VI.A.3.   Mark McBride and Charles Fink respond to questions about proposed changes to the biological sciences and microbiology majors. It was moved, seconded, and approved to recommend to the Dean approval of the recommendation to eliminate the microbiology option of the biological sciences major and to change the requirements of the biological sciences and the microbiology majors to reflect the new research requirement.
VI.B.2.   Gabrielle Verdier attended the meeting to respond to questions about the proposed new curricular area in Translation and the associated CAR forms. She explained that the new curricular area would help students working in the translation area to identify more easily the courses in their interest area and would provide students with an easily recognizable course of study on their transcripts. Gabrielle also explained that the proposed new course, Trnsltn 709, is the same course as MAFLL 709, which is routinely offered by MAFLL. The action being sought was simply to make the course jointly offered between MAFLL and Trnsltn. Trnsltn 726 is a highly technical course that would only be of interest to Translation students, which is why a number change from MAFLL to Trnsltn was being sought. It was moved, seconded, and approved to recommend to the Dean approval of the Translation curricular code and the associated CAR forms listed below.
MAFLL 709   Seminar in Literary and Cultural Translation (prereq; j-o w/Trnsltn)
Trnsltn 709 Seminar in Literary and Cultural Translation (new; j-o w/MAFLL)
Trnsltn 726 Computer Assisted Translation (# chg from MAFLL 726)
VI.B.4.    James Mileham attended the meeting to respond to questions about the French Program's proposed revision to the French major and proposed research requirement. Jim told the committee that French 599, the course proposed by the French department to meet the research requirement, is not yet on the books but will be developed soon. The addition of this course to the major requirements increases the number of credits required for the major to 28. It was moved, seconded, and approved to recommend to the Dean approval of the French Program's recommendation to revise the requirements of the French major.
VI.D.1.g.   Jim Mileham also addressed questions about the French major's research proposal. It was moved, seconded, and approved to recommend to the Dean approval of the French major's research requirement proposal.

It was moved, seconded, and approved to return to the order of the agenda.

    4. Other
      1. Research Requirement Proposals - It was moved and seconded to recommend to the Dean approval of each of the following proposals for completion of the L&S research requirement. The Committee's action on each of those motions is indicated:
        1. Anthropology - The motion was approved.
        2. Biological Sciences - See above
        3. Economics - It was moved, seconded, and approved to table the proposal and ask the department to respond more fully to question 5 on the proposal form.

        5. Microbiology - See above
        6. Sociology - The motion was approved.
        7. French - See above
      2. Discussion of Approval Process - Connie Jo told the committee that she was working with someone to transform a course currently designated as an undergraduate course to a course that carries undergraduate/graduate status. The Graduate Curriculum Committee requires the completion of an "Undergraduate/Graduate Course Proposal Form" in lieu of a syllabus. Connie asked the committee if they would accept this form in cases where the only change on a CAR form is to change a course from "U" to "U/G" status. A motion was made, seconded, and approved (with one member opposed) to accept this form in lieu of a syllabus in cases where a course is being changed from "U" to "U/G" status.

As there was a little time remaining, the committee returned to discussion of old business.

  5. Old Business
    1. Assessment of L&S Degree Requirements - After some discussion, committee members agreed that the assessment of the research requirement component of the L&S degree requirements should be completed once a year by departments in conjunction with the department's report of the assessment of its major. To provide a frame of reference, the document requesting this assessment information should reference back to the department's research requirement document, which is where each department originally outlined its assessment plan. Kathryn Dindia said she will draft specific language within the parameters discussed and bring it to the next meeting.

The committee briefly discussed assessment of the L&S breadth requirement. There was not enough time, however, to pursue this in a meaningful way, so this item was postponed until the next meeting.
    2. Sport and Recreation Courses - postponed until the next meeting
VII.   Adjournment - The meeting was adjourned at 5:25 p.m.

Respectfully submitted,

Connie Jo, Assistant Dean
Secretary to the L&S Faculty
