UW-Milwaukee - College of Letters and Science

Academic Policies and Curriculum Committee

Meeting: Monday, May 7, 2007, 3:00 p.m.
Holton Hall 241

Minutes No. 11

Present: Kathryn Dindia, Douglas Howland, Connie Jo, Jay Moore, Tom O'Bryan, Jeffrey Oxford, Steven Redd, Charles Schuster, Kristene Surerus, Michael Weinert
Excused: John Berges, Peter Sands
Guests: Kenneth Bendiner, Paul Brodwin, Kim Romenesko, Stefen Schnitzer, Bill Washabaugh

  1. Call to Order - The Chair, Kathryn Dindia, called the meeting to order at 3:05 p.m. in HLT 241.

It was moved, seconded, and approved to suspend the agenda to accommodate guests and attend to new business.

VI. A.2. It was moved and seconded to recommend to the Dean approval of the following courses for international status:
Anthro 104   Lifeways in Different Cultures: A Survey of World Societies
    Anthro 440 Medical Anthropology
Paul Brodwin and Bill Washabaugh were available to answer questions. The motion was approved.
VI. C.2.   It was moved and seconded to recommend to the Dean approval of the following course for international status:
Art Hist 373 The Art of Mesoamerica
Kenneth Bendiner was available to answer questions. The motion was approved.
VI. A.1. It was moved and seconded to recommend to the Dean approval of the following course:
Ethnic 350 Advanced Topics in Comparative Ethnic Studies: (Subtitle) (new)
After much discussion, the motion to approve Ethnic 350 was denied. Committee members thought the sample syllabus that was submitted with the topic "Race, Gender and the Prison Industrial Complex" presented only one side of a multi-faceted issue; the course needed to be more "balanced" to be acceptable. The other two topics that were given were acceptable.
VI. B1. The following course, approved at the April 9 meeting, was returned to the committee because a change was made in the credits (from 4 to 3) and the title was corrected:
Bio Sci 475 Topical Ecology: (Subtitle) (title, cr, descrip, prereq) - approved at April 9 meeting; cr corrected to 3, not 4
It was moved and seconded to recommend to the Dean approval of the course in its revised form. Stefan Schnitzer was present to answer questions about the course. The motion was approved.
VI. A3. It was moved and seconded to recommend to the Dean approval of the proposal to revise the requirements of the Comparative Ethnic Studies Certificate. The committee was concerned that the Ethnic Studies Program would not have an adequate number of upper level course offerings without Ethnic 350, a variable topic course that was not approved (see above). Consequently, the motion to revise the requirements of the Ethnic Studies Certificate was tabled. The committee said it would be helpful if the Director of Ethnic Studies, Rachel Buff, could be present at the next meeting to discuss the proposed changes.

It was moved, seconded, and approved to return to the order of the agenda.

  2. Procedural Matters
    1. Informational matters - There were no questions concerning the following matters:
      • The Comparative Study of Religion major program change proposal approved at the last AP&CC meeting has been modified to remove the "Stage I" revision. The proposal to incorporate the research requirement will be sent forward. The program plans to make additional changes to the Stage I, II, and III requirements in the near future.
      • The CAR form for Sociol 700 Professional Seminar approved at the last meeting has been withdrawn. The Graduate School requested that the department instead set up a new course, 701, that is identical to the form proposed for 700. The use of a new course number will allow the change to be effective in Fall, 2007 when the next cohort of graduate students is admitted. Sociol 701 is listed under automatic approval below because it is identical to the revised 700. The form has been forwarded to the Graduate School in order to secure approval prior to the end of the academic year.
    2. Election of chair for 2007-2008 - There was one nomination, Jeffrey Oxford, to serve as the Chair of the Committee for 2007-2008. He was unanimously and enthusiastically elected.
    3. Authorization for summer actions - It was moved, seconded, and approved to authorize the Chair to act on behalf of the committee for non-controversial items submitted during the summer.
    4. Request for blanket approval of CAR forms dropping international and seminar statements - It was moved, seconded, and approved to grant blanket approval to CAR forms on which the only change is the removal of the seminar or international statement.
  3. Automatic Approval - There were no questions about any of the Automatic Approval items.

MthStat 591   Foundations of Professional Practice in Actuarial Science (new)
The motion was approved with friendly suggestions to add the policy link to the syllabus and explain in more detail how absences affect students' grades.

It was moved and seconded to recommend to the Dean approval of the following course:
MthStat 592   Professional Development Seminar (new)
Tom O'Bryan stated that he believes the course is meant to prepare students for the actuarial exam by reviewing material taught in other classes, and he indicated that he did not feel students should earn credit for the class. The course was tabled, and the department will be asked whether or not the course contains new material. The committee thought it would be helpful if someone from Math could attend the next meeting to address members' questions.

VI.B2. It was moved, seconded, and approved to recommend to the dean approval of the Math Department's Research Requirement proposal.

VI.B.3. It was moved, seconded, and approved to recommend to the dean approval of the proposal to revise the requirements of the Math Department Major to incorporate the research requirement.

VI.B.4 It was moved, seconded, and approved to recommend to the dean approval of the proposal to eliminate the Biotechnology Certificate.

VI.C.1. It was moved, seconded, and approved to recommend to the Dean approval of the following course: Spanish 338 Spanish for Health Professionals I (new)

VI.D.1. It was moved and seconded to recommend to the Dean approval of the following course.

The motion was approved with the contingency that junior status be added to the CAR form as a prerequisite (it was mistakenly left off) and that the policy link be added to the syllabus. The recommendation includes approval of international status for the course.

It was moved, seconded, and approved to return to the order of the agenda.

  5. Old Business
    1. Curricular Areas/Certificate Programs (O'Bryan report on Independent Study) - Tom distributed a list of independent study registrations for fall 2006 (copy attached to original of these minutes). Of 79 registrations in L&S curricular areas, only 6 were in curricular areas not housed in a department. Tom indicated that most of the study proposals that he reviewed were fine. He indicated that his concern about faculty oversight of independent study in non-departmental curricular areas may be without foundation, although he thought the small number of such registrations might be an anomaly. He suggested that he look at another round of proposals from fall 2007 and report back to the committee next year.
    2. Assessment of L&S Degree Requirements - Committee members were uncertain about the level of assessment that needs to occur. Tom O'Bryan believes that assessment of the major is all that is necessary. Connie Jo believes that all parts of the degree requirements need to be assessed. The committee decided to ask Dean Meadows what he wants to happen. After getting some direction from the Dean, a group consisting of the Associate Deans, Kathryn Dindia (as out-going chair), Jeffrey Oxford (as in-coming chair), and Connie Jo will meet over the summer to formulate a recommendation to bring back to the committee in the fall.
    3. Sport and Recreation Courses - In response to a question about why this item has remained on the agenda, Connie Jo indicated that the L&S Faculty had charged the curriculum committee to develop a strongly-supported proposal to not accept Sport and Recreation courses toward the L&S degree. Tom O'Bryan said that data indicate that few students would be affected by the proposal. He added that the Provost failed to approve the proposal the first time and probably would not approve it a second time, given that nothing has changed. He also noted that the proposal generates ill will toward the College. The Committee agreed to recommend to the Faculty that this issue be dropped.
