Comp Lit 192   Freshman Seminar: (Subtitle) - all topics
VI.A.7. It was moved and seconded to recommend to the dean approval of the Scandinavian Studies curricular code. The motion was approved.
VI.B2. It was moved and seconded to recommend to the dean approval of Africology's research requirement proposal - Tom O'Bryan pointed out that Africology's plan to have students complete the research requirement via Africology 699 (independent study) was problematic because students need a cumulative g.p.a. of 2.5 to be eligible to enroll in 699 courses. An Africology student could be in good standing in the major but not meet the overall gpa prereq for independent study. Students in this situation would not be able to complete the research requirement. The committee did not want to table the proposal, however, because Africology students currently have no way to complete the research requirement. Because the gpa problem would likely not impact many (if any) students in the near future, the committee approved the motion. The chair will inform the department of the problem and urge the faculty to submit a revised proposal as soon as possible. The matter will need to be resolved before the current freshmen reach their senior year.
VI.B3. It was moved and seconded to recommend to the dean approval of the proposal to revise the requirements of the major in Africology. The motion was approved.
VI.D.1.   Transcript Designation of Optional Concentrations discussion - Connie Jo 'splained (no, summed up) that UWM currently allows only one specialty option within a major to be printed on a student's transcript. She had received an inquiry asking whether or not this is likely to change in the future. Connie asked members how they felt about changing the policy so that all specialty areas completed in a major would be printed on the transcript. Committee members felt this kind of information is best communicated on a student's resume rather than on the transcript. They determined, therefore, that there is no compelling reason at this time to change the existing policy. If a department wishes to submit a specific proposal, however, the committee will give it due consideration.

It was moved, seconded, and approved to return to the order of the agenda.

  5. Old Business
    1. It was moved and seconded to recommend to the Dean approval of the following course for international status. The motion was approved.
Anthro 355   Globalization, Culture and Environment (prereq)
    2. Curricular Areas/Certificate Programs (see attachments) - After looking at the report Connie prepared, Tom O'Bryan clarified for the committee that his concern is largely with curricular areas that are not housed in Departments. He stated that independent study proposals that come from areas without faculty oversight often are turned in late and are poorly done. It was suggested that L&S Associate Deans could be involved in the process somehow to provide a level of faculty oversight. Other members noted that late submission of proposals was common even in departments. Connie Jo said that the problem of late proposals could be addressed by enforcing consent of the Associate Dean for SAS. This would force students to complete their proposals and get the appropriate approvals before being allowed to register. If the proposal was not acceptable, students would have to rework it. Tom said he would talk with his staff about the possible ramifications of enforcing consent to register for independent studies in targeted areas and report back to the committee at its next meeting.
