- Director's Report:
* Larry Baldassaro announced that the name of the "Honors Program Committee" was formally changed to the "Honors College Advisory Committee" in light of the program's recent name change to "Honors College." He reported that all of the Honors College's material had been updated such as the brochure, web-site, stationary, etc. He distributed a copy of the new brochure and encouraged members to visit the new web-site.
* Baldassaro reported on some of the events and activities recently sponsored by the Honors College, including a Senior Thesis and Project Informational Meeting presented by David Southward and a Scholarship Application Workshop organized by Kate Coffaro. Both events went well, though attendance was not as high as the organizers would have liked. Scholarship and Essay Contest Judging Committees have been formed or will be formed soon to determine the winners of the HC Scholarship, KleinOsowski Scholarship, and Essay Contest. The HC Graduation Reception is scheduled for Saturday, May 13th. All members of the HCC should have received invitations to the event.
* Kate Coffaro reported on the activities of the HCSA. She said the HCSA held two successful booksales this year, raising $726.00. Other activities include HCSA elections (to be held later this month), and volunteer activities with Toys for Tots, Hunger Clean-Up, and Habitat for Humanity.
* Baldassaro reported that he recently approached the Provost about funding for faculty development grants. He explained that the Honors College was having a tough time finding upper level courses because so many departmental faculty have left or are leaving UWM. He hopes that providing small grants for Honors course development will provide incentive to faculty and departments to create and offer more Honors seminars in the future. Baldassaro said he would let the HCC know the outcome of his request to the Provost.
* Baldassaro announced that a couple of large donations have recently been promised for Honors College scholarships. The Baird Corporation pledged $100,000 over the next five years to the Honors College and a donor named Mr. Mosher pledged $200,000 over the next four years. The details of the donations will not be known until the UWM Foundation completes the formal legal agreements but a significant amount will go toward scholarships.
* Baldassaro thanked the HCC for their participation and service to the Honors College. He gave special thanks to out-going members Tom Holme, Dusty Kopecky, Dana Weber, and Howard Handleman. He also announced various personnel changes in the Honors College. The HC has a new PA, Laura Murphy, starting next Monday, April 17th. Laura comes with many years of on-campus experience. Philip Lorenz is leaving the Honors College for a tenure track position at Cornell University after fulfilling two of his three years as a Bradley Professor of Literature. Baldassaro thanked Philip and wished him good luck. Baldassaro also thanked Scott Spiker, Bradley Professor of Philosophy, for agreeing to stay on one more year to fill the last year of Philip's term. Finally, he announced that David Southward, Honors College Lecturer, was recently granted an indefinite appointment.
- The Semester II 2005-06 Honors College Enrollment Report was distributed.
- The meeting adjourned at 8:50 a.m.
