Academic Policies and Curriculum Committee
Annual Report
2004-2005

This was the first year of the new Academic Policies and Curriculum Committee (AP&CC), which was created last year when the L&S Faculty combined the functions of the Academic Policy and Appeals, Course and Curriculum, and Graduate Program Committees. The AP&CC held nine meetings during the academic year to carry out its functions as authorized by L&S Faculty Document No. 694. The Committee met on the following dates: September 15, October 12, November 10, & December 7, 2004 and January 18, February 22, March 15, April 19, and May 17, 2005.

Procedural Matters

  1. Kent Redding was elected Chair for the 2004-2005 academic year.
  2. Kathryn Dindia was elected Co-Chair for the year.
  3. Sub-committee chairs elected were as follows: HU - Kathryn Dindia, NS - Kris Surerus, SS - Steven Redd.
  4. The Committee authorized the Chair to act on behalf of the Committee to approve non-controversial items submitted during Summer, 2005.
  5. A sub-committee to review courses for the international requirement was appointed with the following members: Margaret Atherton, Jay Beder, John Berges, Kathryn Dindia, Josepha Lanters, Kristin Ruggiero, and Gabrielle Verdier.
  6. A sub-committee to continue work on consideration of an Extraordinary Accommodations Policy was appointed with the following members: Vicki Bott, Anthony Greene, Michael Gordon, Richard Stockbridge, Kris Surerus, and Kathy Wheatley.
  7. Nominated faculty members for the Graduate Research and Graduate Scholastic Appeals Committees and for the Graduate Faculty Council. There were no L&S vacancies on the Graduate Fellowship Committee.

Legislative Recommendations

In addition to Course Action and Special Listing Requests, which are discussed below, the following recommendations were forwarded to the Dean for his action or referral to the L&S Faculty:

  1. approval of an amendment to the Committee's charter to require just one member of the full committee to serve on any sub-committees it establishes;
  2. approval of a proposal to modify the requirements of the Master of Human Resources and Labor Relations;
  3. approval of a proposal to modify the requirements of the Master of Arts in Communication;
  4. approval of a proposal to modify the requirements of the English major;
  5. approval of a proposal to withdraw from the Augmented Film Faculty administrative authority for the Film Studies Program;
  6. approval of a proposal to modify the requirements of the Certificate in Ancient Mediterranean Studies;
  7. approval of a proposal to modify the requirements of the Ph.D. in Economics;
  8. approval of a proposal to modify the requirements of the Political Science major;
  9. approval of a proposal to modify the requirements of the Women's Studies major;
  10. approval of a proposal to modify the requirements of the German major;
  11. approval of a proposal to modify the requirements of the German minor;
  12. approval of a proposal to modify the requirements of the Business German minor;
  13. approval of a proposal to modify the requirements of the Africology major;
  14. approval of a proposal to modify the requirements of the Certificate in Peace Studies;
  15. approval of a proposal to modify the requirements of the Master of Arts in Art History (Art Museum Studies);
  16. approval of a proposal to modify the requirements of the Communication major;
  17. approval of a proposal to modify the requirements of the Certificate in Latino Studies;
  18. approval of a proposal to modify the requirements of the Atmospheric Sciences major;
  19. approval of a proposal to modify the requirements of the Conservation and Environmental Sciences major;
  20. approval of a proposal to modify the requirements of the Ph.D. in Psychology;
  21. approval of a proposal to modify the requirements of the Ph.D. in Geography;
  22. approval of a proposal to modify the requirements of the Geography major;
  23. approval of a proposal to count Geography 525 and 625 as advanced natural science courses for the L&S degree;
  24. approval of a proposal to modify the requirements of the Certificate in Middle Eastern and North African Studies;
  25. approval of the proposed implementation plan for the Microbiology major;
  26. approval of a proposal to modify the requirements of the Translation option of the Master of Arts in Foreign Language and Literature;
  27. approval of a proposal to modify the recommendation to revise the L&S degree requirements by modifying the foreign language recommendation;
  28. approval of a proposal to modify the requirements of the Biological Sciences minor;
  29. approval of a request for an entitlement to plan a Master of Arts in Women's Studies;
  30. approval of a proposal to modify the requirements to declare the Psychology major;
  31. approval of a proposal to modify the requirements of the Certificate in Celtic Studies;
  32. approval of a proposal to modify the requirements of the Film Studies major;
  33. approval of a proposal to modify the requirements of the Mathematical Sciences majors and options;
  34. approval of a new Earth and Freshwater Sciences (EFS) curricular area;
  35. approval of a proposal to modify the name and requirements of the Ph.D. in Geosciences, renaming it the Ph.D. in Earth and Freshwater Sciences;
  36. approval of a proposal to modify the requirements of the Bachelor of Arts in Global Studies to include new tracks in "Global Cities" and "Global Classrooms" (proposal later withdrawn);
  37. approval of a proposal to modify the requirements of the Biochemistry major;
  38. approval of a proposal to modify the recommendation to revise the L&S degree requirements by modifying the international requirement recommendation;
  39. approval of an additional proposal to modify the requirements of the Master of Arts in Communication;
  40. approval of a new Celtic Studies (Celtic) curricular area;
  41. approval of a proposal to change the name of the Certificate in Ethnic Studies to the Certificate in Comparative Ethnic Studies;
  42. approval, during the summer, of a new Jewish Studies (Jewish) curricular area;
  43. approval, during the summer, of a proposal to modify the requirements of the Master of Science in Anthropology;
  44. approval, during the summer, of a proposal to modify the requirements of the Ph.D. in Anthropology;
  45. reaffirmation of the committee's support of the recommendation not to count Sport and Recreation courses toward the L&S degree.

In addition, the following items were tabled:

  1. a proposal to establish a medical physics track in the Master of Science in Physics, asking that CAR forms for related courses be developed and submitted;
  2. a proposal to modify the requirements of the Certificate in Jewish Studies, requesting a rationale for including Arabic in the certificate (a proposal later was withdrawn due to discussions about the future of Jewish and Hebrew Studies; subsequently, non-substantive changes were made in the certificate program).

Course Review and Approval

A primary function of the Committee is to review all requests for new courses, modifications of existing courses, course deletions, and changes to GER and/or undergraduate/graduate status.
