- English Composition Competency Requirement - It was moved, seconded, and approved to recommend to the L&S Faculty approval of the policy statement concerning acceptance of a grade in English 102 to complete the competency requirement when the student does not earn credit for the course.
- Undergraduate/Graduate Differentiation - The Chair discussed the feedback from the Graduate Curriculum Committee following a meeting concerning the effects of the U/G differentiation required by that committee. She indicated that she believed that no additional information would be forthcoming. The Committee asked Connie Jo to share this information with faculty members who inquired about this matter.
- PAWS and Prerequisites - The Chair announced that Enrollment Services confirmed that PAWS now will look at all pending coursework to determine if a student meets a course prerequisite. This makes it less problematic to enforce course prerequisites. She asked if committee members wished to send a formal notice to departments concerning this change. It was agreed that dissemination of this information would be handled on an ad hoc basis.

| Geog 130 |
Geography of Islam (new) - It was moved and seconded to recommend to the Dean approval of Geog 130. Concern was expressed that the course was not really a geography course. Some members felt that a good portion of the course dealt with Islamic culture in a way that was likely to overlap courses on this subject offered in other departments. The motion was amended to indicate that approval was recommended contingent upon obtaining statements that there is no objectionable overlap from other departments that offer courses on Islam. Connie Jo identified Anthropology, FLL, History, and Philosophy as departments that offer such courses and asked if any others should be contacted. No one had any other suggestions. The motion was approved. |

- Request for Approval for International Requirement - discussion of these requests was postponed until completion of the action concerning item D.3. below. Subsequently, it was moved, seconded, and approved to recommend to the Dean approval of the following two courses to satisfy the international requirement under the new definition.
Honors 200 Honors Seminar: The Shaping of the Modern Mind - 2 subtitles
"The Imperial Idea in Modern European History"
"The Idea of the Nation in Modern History"
- International Requirement - Connie Jo reported that the College had not yet developed and approved list of international courses for the degree requirements going into effect in Fall, 2006. Advisors need that list very soon as they will begin registering freshmen in June. Connie indicated that she had compiled a list of all the courses that were being offered in the Fall that appeared on the current list. She suggested that the departments be asked to submit for approval any of those courses open to freshman students that the departments wished to place on the new list. She presented a draft form that would address the criteria approved by the Faculty. Kathryn Dindia suggested that departments be asked for those proposals by June 1 and that they also be asked to submit the remainder of their proposals for the international list by October 1. It was moved, seconded, and approved to implement this plan. Kathryn and Connie will prepare a memo to department chairs outlining the information needed very soon for implementation of the new requirements. A subcommittee composed of Margaret Atherton, Jay Beder, John Berges, Kathryn Dindia, Jeffrey Oxford, and Charles Schuster will meet prior to June 20 to review department proposals.
Connie noted that the above action did not solve the problem of how to assess whether or not current students who switched to the new degree requirements met the international requirement. It was moved, seconded, and approved to recommend to the Dean that current students who opt for the new requirements be allowed to count any courses on the current or new list of international courses.
The Committee then discussed implementation of the research requirement. It was suggested that a form similar to that used for the international requirement be developed for the research requirement, listing the criteria that a course must meet to satisfy the requirement. Tom O'Bryan argued against using a form. Ultimately, it was agreed that the memo from the committee chair would ask for departments to provide the needed information without using a form.
Connie Jo presented to the Committee a list (copy attached to original of these minutes), prepared by Cheryl Scherkenbach and her, of courses that would satisfy the breadth requirements using the following criteria:
- course currently is approved for GER;
- course has a prerequisite course that currently is approved for GER;
- course was approved for L&S distribution credit prior to Fall, 1986.
She also provided a list (copy attached to original of these minutes) of courses that did not fit on the approved list according to these criteria. Connie then noted that the resulting approved list excluded some courses that clearly belonged on it while including others that would not have been on the old distribution list because of their focus on language or skill acquisition. She presented a list (copy attached to original of these minutes) of recommended changes to the proposed breadth requirement list, prepared by Cheryl and her, noting that exclusion from the list at this point did not imply a course could not be approved. She suggested erring on the side of caution, including only those courses about which there were no questions. Departments can request approval of other courses, justifying them according to the criteria that the Committee adopted previously. She noted that variable topic courses in curricular areas that fit into more than one category could not be included on the approved list because individual topics might fit under one or another category. The Committee agreed and, in addition, approved the exclusion of ad hoc courses, study abroad courses, internships, independent study courses, and any other courses that involved the work of individual students as opposed to a class of students. Connie was asked to update the breadth list according to these exclusion criteria as well as with the changes from the recommended list. She then will distribute the revised list, along with the approved breadth criteria, to the committee members via email. Members will review the courses in their divisional areas and let Connie know of any courses about which they have questions. The resulting list will have the committee's approval. Departments will be asked to review their courses on the approved list and to notify Connie of any courses that should be removed. If departments wish to add courses or to change the breadth category, they must make a case for those courses using the approved criteria.
- Implementation Subcommittee's Assessment Recommendations - It was agreed to hold over discussion of assessment until the committee reconvenes in the Fall.
- breadth requirement
- research requirement
- Declaring a Major Online - This issue also will be held over until Fall.
- Adjournment - The meeting was adjourned at 2:22 p.m.
Respectfully submitted,
Connie Jo, Assistant Dean
Secretary to the L&S Faculty
