    1. Minutes #6, 2005-2006 (February 22, 2006) - There were no changes to the minutes; they stand approved.
    2. Special Listing Requests - It was moved, seconded, and approved to table two of the Special Listing Requests (SLRs) (indicated below with an asterisk) and to ask the Cultures and Communities Program to provide an explanation of why these listings are appropriate. The Committee also indicated that the Archit 584 listing should be tabled to get information about how it related to Cultures and Communities. Committee members did not notice until later that C&C was not making the request; it was coming from Urban Studies. It, therefore, was not covered in the Committee's motion to table. There were no objections to any of the other SLRs; they stand approved.

  5. Old Business
    1. English 237 (new), tabled - There was a long discussion with Sandra Brusin representing the English composition program, focused primarily on how English instructors could teach the writing conventions of the various disciplines that the students in this course would represent. The Committee members expressed support for providing additional instruction in writing, but they thought some other format might be more appropriate. Sandra will take the Committee's concerns back to the writing committee in English for discussion.

  6. New Business
    1. Humanities - It was moved, seconded, and approved to recommend to the Dean blanket approval of CAR forms for Commun 300 and all upper-division Communication courses to add "satisfaction of GER English Composition competency req" to the courses' prerequisites.

Don Pienkos explained the background of this request. The motion was approved unanimously.
    3. Natural Sciences
      1. CAR Form - It was moved, seconded, and approved to recommend to the Dean approval of the following CAR:
        Geo Sci 638   Advanced Igneous Petrology (title, descrip, prereq) - gray
    4. Other
      1. Draft Memo Re: U/G Differentiation - The draft memo to the Graduate School regarding its requirements for U/G differentiation in course syllabi was reviewed. Several changes were proposed and approved. Connie Jo will make the corrections and send the memo.
      2. Implementation Subcommittee Recommendations - The subcommittee recommendations were reviewed and the following suggestions made for changes to the report:
        • add high school equivalencies to the foreign language section;
        • change the wording describing the breadth requirement list to indicate it is a preliminary list, not a final list, and add a third point that departments and program be asked to affirm the list and/or propose changes;
        • clarify point (3) under the definition of upper-division courses to make it less confusing;
        • make departments aware that, except for class standing, prerequisites are not enforced during registration.
        Members agreed that the implementation plan would require Faculty approval, but they felt it could be listed as automatic consent business.

        Discussion of the last bullet point above led to the following Committee action: moved, seconded, and approved to ask that the Dean pursue getting I&MT to reprogram the way PAWS checks course prerequisites. Kathryn and Connie will prepare the memo.
      3. Student Appeal (confidential) - Committee members considered an appeal to be reinstated for the current semester from a student who received a one-semester academic drop. After discussing the student's appeal letter and academic record, the members voted unanimously not to approve the appeal. Kathryn will write to the student informing him of the decision.

  7. Adjournment - The meeting was adjourned at 1:56 p.m.

Respectfully submitted,

Connie Jo, Assistant Dean
