The Chair requested the Committee's permission to address New Business before Old Business. There was no objection.

VI.A.1.   It was moved, seconded, and approved to recommend to the Dean approval of the recommendation to revise the requirements of the Communication M.A.

VI.D.1. Committee members discussed at length whether or not the AP&CC is the best committee to make nominations for Graduate School Committees. Connie explained that it is a Graduate School policy to ask the school/college graduate program committee to do so. The L&S GPC was folded into the AP&CC; therefore, its charter contains this responsibility. The Committee charged Connie with asking the Graduate School for approval to move that function to the AP&GC, which does nominations for the L&S Committee. If the Graduate School agrees, Connie will draft changes to the charters of the two L&S Committees, and the AP&CC will recommend the change to the AP&GC. The Committee members also agreed to defer to the AP&GC's recommendations for this year.

VI.D.3 Tom O'Bryan reiterated his concern about advanced level courses that do not have any course prerequisites. Kathryn Dindia reminded everyone that the Faculty recently approved a definition of "upper-division/advanced level" courses that did not require a course prerequisite if junior standing was required. Tom indicated that he would continue to have the concern, but he agreed that he would not raise the issue again. Kathryn noted that the issue will be discussed again at the March meeting in the context of the implementation subcommittee's report.

The committee returned to the order of the agenda.

  5. Old Business
    1. English 237 (Alice Gillam) - No representatives from the English Department came to the meeting, so the Committee agreed to keep the course on the table until March.
    2. Standard Syllabus Content - There was a lengthy discussion concerning the adoption of a standard format for all L&S syllabi. After reviewing the pros and cons of various possibilities, Committee members agreed that standard information regarding religious observances, accessibility, and others areas of concern should be put on a College web site, and all syllabi should include information about how to reach that web site. Tom O'Bryan agreed to do a mock up of such a web page for the March meeting.
    3. Self-Contained L&S Degree Programs - After discussion of the differences between the L&S stand-alone degree programs and the new L&S degree requirements, the Committee took no action.
    4. Sport and Recreation Courses - After discussing the Faculty's request that the Committee develop a proposal to disallow Sport and Recreation courses to generate credits toward an L&S degree, members decided to hold over the matter for the next academic year.
    5. Variable Content Courses - Following a brief discussion of concerns about overlap with subtitled courses, the Committee took no action.

  6. New Business
    1. Humanities
      1. Recommendation to Revise the Requirements of the Communication MA - approved; see above.
    2. Social Sciences - none
    3. Natural Sciences - none

      2. JMC Grading Policy (report) - Connie Jo reported that the chair of the JMC Department, David Allen, had informed her that the department is in the middle of its own review of the policy about which committee members have expressed concerns. He will report department actions on this matter, if any.
      3. Course Prerequisites (discussion item) - see above.

  7. Adjournment - The meeting was adjourned at 1:25.
