Graduate Program Committee
Annual Report
2003-2004

The Graduate Program Committee of the College of Letters and Science held four meetings during the academic year to carry out its functions as authorized by the Rules Governing the Letters and Science Faculty Chapter 2.12. The meetings were: October 8, 2003; November 5, 2003; February 9, 2004; and April 5, 2004.

Procedural Issues

Swarnjit Arora was elected unanimously as Committee Co-Chair for the 2003-2004 academic year. The annual report for 2002-2003 was approved as submitted.

Legislative Recommendations

The following recommendations were forwarded to the Dean for his action or referral to the Faculty:

  1. approval of the proposal to change option A of the M.S. in Mathematical Sciences;

  2. approval of the proposal to change the credits required for the Certificate in International Technical Communication;

  3. approval of the change to Plan G of the M.A. in English;

  4. approval of the proposal to change the Professional Writing option of the Ph.D. in English;

  5. approval of the request for an entitlement to plan M.S. and Ph.D. degrees in Freshwater Sciences;

  6. approval of the editorial changes in the previously approved proposal for the Communication Ph.D.;

  7. approval of the proposal to increase the credits for the Graduate Certificate in Women's Studies;

  8. approval of the recommendation to establish a graduate certificate in Applied Gerontology;

  9. approval of the change to Plan B of the M.A. in English;

  10. approval of the proposal to change the M.A. requirements in Urban Studies;

  11. approval of the request for an entitlement to plan an M.S. in Nonprofit Management and Leadership;

  12. approval of the proposal to change the requirements of the Translation Certificate;

  13. approval of the proposal to change the requirements in the MAFLL Program. The Program should substitute the words (except in the title of the degree) "a language other than English" for "foreign language" to reflect current usage and to clarify for international students the focus of the Program.

The following recommendations were forwarded to the Committee on Committees:

  1. that the Graduate Program Committee and the Course and Curriculum Committee be combined into a curriculum committee, the functions of which would not incorporate the functions of the Academic Policies and Appeals Committee.

  2. that the functions of the Committee on Committees be incorporated into those of the Academic Planning Committee.
