- Call to Order - The chair, Kathleen Dolan, called the meeting to order at 1:05 p.m. in HLT 241.
- Automatic Consent
- There were no objections to Minutes #8 (April 29, 2005); they stand approved.
- Procedural Matters
- Summer Availability (for Dean's information) - In the event that the Dean wishes to seek the Committee's advice during the summer, members' plans for time in town were discussed. The following plans were noted:
- Doug Cherkauer - gone until July 10
- Kathy Dolan - plans to be here all summer
- Peter Geissinger - will take some vacation time, not yet scheduled
- David Heathcote - plans to be here all summer
- Jack Johnson - will not be here June 15 to August 15
- Kris Ruggiero - will not be here in June
- Gabrielle Verdier - in Milwaukee June 16 to July 15
Connie Jo will check with the members who are not at the meeting.
- Old Business
- Distinguished Professorships - Mark Amsler has not been able to arrange a meeting of the subcommittee, so there is nothing to report.
- New Business
- 2005 Position Requests - The reports of the three subcommittees were received.
Peter Geissinger reported that the natural sciences recommendations closely followed those of Associate Dean Mark Harris. (A copy of the report is attached to the original of these minutes. The recommendations emphasized curricular needs. Requests for the biotechnology and neuroscience initiatives were not considered; the subcommittee understood that funding for these positions will come from elsewhere. Dean Harris' number 1 and 3 positions were interchanged because the Animal Ecologist position was not ranked as a top priority in the Department of Biological Sciences. The recommended rankings are as follows:
- Geosciences/CES: Fluvial Hydrologist
- Mathematical Sciences: Geometry
- Biological Sciences/CES: Animal Ecologist
- Chemistry: Bioanalytical Spectroscopy
- Biological Sciences: Evolutionary Population Geneticist
- Mathematical Sciences: Stochastic Analysis
- Biological Sciences: Molecular Environmental Physiologist
- Physics: Theoretical Particle Physics
- Physics: Experimental Physicist Optics/Biophysics
- Geosciences: Geochemist
- Biological Sciences: Eukaryotic Genomicist
- Mathematical Sciences: Dynamical Systems
The subcommittee members would like to see greater attention given to potential for extramural support. Based on that criterion, an alternative ranking, as follows, was developed.
- Chemistry: Bioanalytical Spectroscopy
- Biological Sciences: Molecular Environmental Physiologist
- Physics: Experimental Physicist Options/Biophysics
- Geoscience: Geochemist
- Biological Sciences: Eukaryotic Genomicist
Kathy Dolan reported that the social sciences subcommittee emphasized curricular needs and enrollment pressures. Members started with the list of priorities prepared by Associate Dean Eleanor Miller. Since her list was prepared, the History Department has lost its colonial Americanist, so this position was added to the list. One other position not on Dean Miller's list was added. The subcommittee's priority rankings, as follows (and see report attached to the original of these minutes), were quite different from those of Dean Miller.
- Psychology: Health Psychology
- History: Modern Central Europe 1870+
- Political Science: Wilder Crane Professor
- Urban Studies: content of position to be determined by program
- History: Colonial America
- Economics: Public Economics/Environmental Policy
- Africology: Folklore, Music, Popular Culture
- Psychology/Africology: Health Psychology with specialty in African American Health
- Geography: Urban Water Resources/GIS
- American Indian Studies Coordinator
- Anthropology: Archaeologist with specialty in paleobotanical analysis
- Economics, Geography, History, Political Science, or Sociology: Social Science Pedagogy
Jack Johnson and Gabrielle Verdier discussed the humanities subcommittee's recommendations. (A copy of the report is attached to the original of these minutes.) They noted that Associate Dean Charles Schuster had not ranked positions in his report to the committee but instead discussed the importance of each request. The subcommittee lowered the ranking of what they called "opportunistic funding" positions, i.e. those that may be funded elsewhere. Members expressed their view that individuals with a pedagogic focus would be very hard to find. In setting priorities, they focused on curricular needs, enrollments, and program synergy, with the greatest emphasis being placed on enrollments. Their recommendations were as follows:
| 1. |
FLL: Arabic |
| 2 & 3 (tie) |
Communication: Organizational/Professional Communication English: Professional Writing |
| 4 & 5 (tie) |
Art History: Film Historian FICL: Italian |
| 6 & 7 (tie) |
Communication: Intercultural/International Communication
either English: ESL/EFL Pedagogy or FLL: Linguistics (Instrumental Phonetics) |
| 8. |
Philosophy: Value Theory |
| 9. |
Spanish and Portuguese: Latin American (Mexican) Literature |
| 10. |
English: American Literature and Modernism |
| 11. |
English: Rhetoric and Composition
|
The Committee discussed whether or not to combine the three lists into a master list. Members decided to submit the recommendations as three separate lists.
- Adjournment - The Chair reminded members that the Committee was meeting with the Dean on Monday, May 16, at 8:00 a.m. in HLT 241. Committee members are interested in knowing what the Chancellor is trying to do and what is the role of L&S in his plans. The meeting was adjourned at 1:22 p.m.
Respectfully submitted,
Connie Jo
