  1. Call to Order - The chair, Kent Redding, called the meeting to order at 1:02 p.m. in Holton Hall 241.

    It was moved, seconded, and approved to suspend the agenda to accommodate guests.

    VI.A.2.   It was moved and seconded to recommend to the Dean approval of the proposal to modify the requirements of the Psychology Ph.D. Susan Lima gave a brief explanation of the change and answered questions from Committee members. The motion was approved.
    VI.A.1. It was moved and seconded to recommend to the Dean approval of the following course:
    Geog 910   Techniques of Research and Presentation (new)
    Mick Day gave a brief description and answered questions concerning the new courses. The motion was approved.
    The Committee agreed to consider a proposal related to the course. It was moved and seconded to recommend to the Dean the proposal to modify the requirements of the Geography Ph.D. Mick Day gave a brief explanation and answered questions concerning the changes in the Geography Ph.D. The motion was approved.
    VI.A.3. It was moved and seconded to recommend to the Dean approval of the proposal to modify the requirements of the Geography major. Mick Day gave a brief explanation and answered questions concerning the change in the Geography major. The motion was approved.
    VI.C.1. It was moved and seconded to recommended to the Dean approval of the proposal to count Geog 525 and 625 as advanced natural science courses for the B.S. degree. Changshan Wu and Mick Day gave a brief explanation and answered questions from the committee members. The motion was approved.
    VI.A.4. It was moved and seconded to recommend to the Dean approval of the proposal to modify the requirements of the Certificate in Middle Eastern and North African Studies. Caroline Seymour-Jorn and Ellen Amster gave a brief explanation and answered questions concerning this proposal. After much discussion, it was agreed to strike Section III and add "at least 12 additional credits selected from the approved electives list, of which at least 9 credits must be at the 300-level or above." With that change, the motion was approved.
    VI.C.3. It was moved and seconded to recommend to the Dean approval of the proposal to add a medical physics track to the Physics M.S. Dilano Saldin gave a brief explanation and answered questions. The Committee expressed concern that five of the courses listed for the medical physics track are new courses that they have not reviewed. The motion was tabled. Members asked that the Department submit CAR forms and syllabi for the new courses.

    It was moved, seconded, and approved to return to the order of the agenda.

  4. Procedural Matters
    1. Spring Semester Meeting Schedule - Kent Redding asked for members to submit their schedules to Denise Mueller as soon as possible so she can set up the meetings for the spring semester.

  5. Old Business - green
    1. Linguis 268 CAR - Fourth-Semester Gaelic (new) - tabled; new syllabus requested (attached) - It was moved, seconded, and approved to recommend to the Dean approval of Linguis 268.
    2. Subcommittee Appointments
      1. International Requirement - Kathyn Dinda was elected unanimously as chair of the International subcommittee.
      2. Extraordinary Accommodations - The Committee asked that Connie or Denise contact Tony Greene to ask him to serve as chair for the extraordinary accommodations subcommittee.
    3. Variable Topic Courses - tabled.

        It was moved, seconded, and approved to recommend to the Dean approval of ArtHist 471.
        ArtHist 482 Topics in Non-Western Art: (Subtitle) (new)
        It was moved and seconded to recommend to the Dean approval of ArtHist 482. Members discussed the criteria for courses that are approved for U/G credit. Steven Redd and Kathryn Dindia questioned why U/G courses exist. Members agreed to put a discussion of that matter on the next agenda of the next meeting. The Committee asked the instructor of the course be contacted to request revision of the syllabus to show graduate level content. The motion was approved with one opposed and one abstention, contingent upon the change in the course syllabus to clarify graduate-level content.
      3. Proposal to Modify the Requirements of the Certificate in Jewish Studies - view on web at: http://www.des.uwm.edu/intranet/opc/viewform.cfm?FormID=595 - tabled. The members of the Committee requested a rationale for including Arabic in the certificate.
    3. Natural Science - buff
      1. Proposal to Count Geog 525 and 625 as Advanced Natural Science for the B.S. Degree - see above.
      2. Proposal to Approve the Implementation Plan for the Microbiology Major - It was moved, seconded, and approved to recommend to the Dean approval of the implementation plan for the microbiology major.
      3. Recommendation to Add a Medical Physics Track to the Physics M.S. - see above.
    4. Other - white

      2. ExMural 100   Study Abroad: UWM Exchange Program (new) - tabled.
        ExMural 700 Graduate Study Abroad: UWM Exchange Program (new) - tabled.
        Members requested clarification of the need for these courses. The Committee asked that Connie or Denise contact CIE to ask the Department to have a representative at the next meeting to give a brief description and answer any questions the committee may have concerning these courses.
      3. Sport and Recreation Courses - Tom O'Bryan commented that the student expressing concern that Sport and Recreation credits no longer will count towards the L&S degree is from the College of Health Sciences. Members briefly discussed this issue and reaffirmed their support of the recommendation not to count Sport and Recreation courses toward the L&S degree.

  7. Adjournment - The meeting was adjourned at 3:40 pm.
