| VI.A.1. & 4 |
It was moved and seconded to recommend to the Dean approval of a new curricular area in Earth and Freshwater Sciences (EFS) and the name change and revisions in the Geosciences Ph.D. Doug Cherkauer explained that the Geosciences Department has supported a proposal from an ad hoc committee recommending that the Geoscience Ph.D. be reactivated with three tracks and with the name changed to Earth and Freshwater Sciences. These changes will allow students to work more closely with research scientists at the WATER Institute. There will be a small core of common requirements for the three tracks; the new curricular area code (EFS) is being requested for these courses. In addition, there may be some jointly-offered courses in the program, but most of the program's requirements will be met by crosslisting courses already approved in departments. The motion was approved. |
| VI.A.2. |
It was moved and seconded to recommend to the Dean approval of the following three CAR forms:
| EFS 610 |
Freshwater Inland Seas (new) |
| EFS 611 |
Environmental Change and Freshwater Ecosystem Health (new) |
| EFS 901 |
Earth and Freshwater Sciences Seminar (new) |
Connie Jo noted that the prerequisites for 610 and 611 had been changed to require, in addition to "jr st," an advanced natural science course. Tom O'Bryan applauded. The motion was approved. |
| VI.B.1 |
It was moved and seconded to recommend to the Dean approval of a proposal to modify the Global Studies degree. Patrice Petro, Nan Kim-Paik, and Sara West Tully from the Center for International Education described the planning that led to the proposal to add tracks in "Global Cities" (to be offered cooperatively by L&S and the School of Architecture and Urban Planning) and "Global Classrooms" (to be offered cooperatively by L&S and the School of Education). There was considerable discussion of how the "ownership" of the degree would be defined. Connie Jo noted that approval of the proposal would include approval of a structure within which the cooperating partners in any individual track would "own" that track and would grant the degree. The motion was approved. |
The Committee returned to the order of the agenda.
- Procedural Matters
- Election of Chair for 2005-2006 - Kathryn Dindia was elected enthusiastically and unanimously as committee chair for 2005-2006.
- Old Business - green
- Report and Recommendation of International Requirement Subcommittee - Kathryn Dindia, subcommittee chair, moved approval of a proposal to the L&S Faculty to modify Fac. Doc. No. 678 (which defines criteria and procedures for approving courses that fulfill the international requirement). The proposed change would remove the restriction that eligible courses deal with contemporary issues, allowing courses of a historical nature to count toward the requirement. After much discussion, the following amendments to the language of the proposal were adopted:
- Revise the proposal to include recommending a new rationale and implementation provisions;
- change the word "and" in the first bullet point of Fac. Doc. No. 678 to "or";
- delete the fourth provision of the implementation section;
- change the word "other" in the last line of the proposed new rationale to "different."
Connie Jo recommended that the Committee consider another amendment to Fac. Doc. No. 678 that would make the composition of the international subcommittee more flexible so that there would be less difficulty finding members to serve. The recommendation would mandate the appointment of a subcommittee of five to seven members without specifying how many of those members had to be selected from members of the curriculum committee. This amendment (copy attached to the original of these minutes) also was adopted. The proposal as amended was approved.
- Variable Topic Courses - Connie reported that there had been a couple of variable content course topics submitted for the fall Timetable that may have overlapped courses offered by other departments. She had consulted with those departments, and no objections were made. She noted that Homer Hruby could set up a web site that would be used to list all subtitles proposed for the Timetable so that departments could check for overlap with their courses. The Committee agreed this should be done, and members discussed at length whether or not to set a deadline for posting subtitles. Connie was asked to prepare a timeline showing various deadlines for preparation of the Timetables.
