2003-2004
Degree Requirement Review Subcommittee
Meeting: Monday, December 5, 2003, 9:00 a.m.
Holton Hall 241

Minutes No. 5
(revised)

Present:   Jay Beder, Sara Hoot, Connie Jo, Josepha Lanters, Genevieve McBride, Thomas O'Bryan, Kent Redding, Madeleine Velguth
Guest: Denise Mueller

  1. Call to Order - The chair, Kent Redding, called the meeting to order at 9:05 a.m. in Holton Hall 241.

  2. Procedural Matters
    1. Minutes #4 (December 1, 2003) were approved unanimously.

  3. Old Business
    1. Discussion of Committee Members' Reports - Members discussed the degree requirements. Connie Jo expressed her view that the B.S. and B.A. need to be clearly defined. The Subcommittee agreed to call this issue to the attention of the C&CC. Members discussed Military Science credits, but they felt they could not make a decision without having more information about the content of the courses. Connie Jo will provide course descriptions prior to the next meeting. It was moved and seconded to recommend to the C&CC that Sports and Recreation courses not count as credits towards a degree. The motion was approved unanimously.

Tom O'Bryan gave a brief summary of the L&S distribution requirements and his proposal for changing those requirements. It was moved and seconded to recommend to the C&CC that the current L&S distribution requirements be replaced by L&S breadth requirements in order to distinguish the L&S breadth requirements from the University GERs. The motion was approved unanimously.

Kent Redding gave a brief history of the capstone requirement. He reported that most faculty members who responded to the survey felt this requirement should be eliminated. It was moved and seconded to recommend to the C&CC that the capstone requirement be eliminated. The motion was approved unanimously.

It was moved and seconded to recommend to the C&CC an updated version of the mission statement. The Subcommittee discussed the revised mission statement. Sara Hoot will make changes to the statement and send a copy via email to members. The motion was approved unanimously.

Josepha Lanters gave a brief report on the English requirement. She explained that the English Department proposed the creation of a writing center after the writing intensive requirement was eliminated. The center was to be staffed by writing fellows and TAs who would work with departments to improve writing in the disciplines. The plan was not implemented due to a lack of funding. It was moved, seconded, and approved to recommend to the C&CC that the English requirement remain as is and that a writing center be established.

Members discussed the math requirements. Jay Beder gave a brief summary of the math requirements for the B.S. and B.A degrees. He proposed that the math requirements for the B.S. be changed to Math 211 or 231 or equivalent, plus one additional course at the 200 level or above chosen from the Mathematical Science or L&S statistics courses. The intent is to prevent Math 225 from being used in partial fulfillment, thus removing an inconsistency in the current requirement. It would also disallow use of a 200-level logic course to fulfill part of the requirement. Tom O'Bryan suggested that "or equivalent" be changed to a list of the specific courses intended, and that Math 225 be explicitly excluded. It was moved and seconded to recommend to the C&CC that the general math requirements remain unchanged except for the removal of logic as an option for the B.S. The motion was approved.

  4. New Business
    1. Review of C&CC Recommendations Concerning the Review - tabled

  5. Adjournment - The meeting was adjourned at 10:40 a.m.

Respectfully submitted,
