2003-2004
Degree Requirement Review Subcommittee
Meeting: Monday, December 1, 2003, 9:00 a.m.
Holton Hall 241

Minutes No. 4

Present:   Jay Beder, Sara Hoot, Connie Jo, Josepha Lanters, Genevieve McBride, Thomas O'Bryan, Kent Redding, Madeleine Velguth
Guest: Denise Mueller
  1. Call to Order - The chair, Kent Redding, called the meeting to order at 9:03 a.m. in Holton Hall 241.

  2. Procedural Matters
    1. Minutes #3 (November 18, 2003) were unanimously approved.

  3. Old Business
    1. Discussion of Committee Members' Reports -
Members of the Committee discussed the revisions made to the mission statement. Sara Hoot will make the changes and send a copy of the revisions via email.

The Committee discussed the international requirement. Members could not come to resolution. They agreed to table the international requirement until the next meeting.

Connie Jo gave a brief summary of the degree requirements. Members agreed not to change the 120 credits required for graduation. They agreed with the 90 credits earned in L&S. Some members strongly disagreed with having Sports and Recreation as well as Military Science count as credits for an L&S degree. The Committee agreed to review military science requirements before the next meeting.

Connie explained that she frequently is asked what defines an advanced course. She expressed concern that the Faculty has not created a clear definition. Some members felt that it should be left up to the departments. It was moved to define an advanced course as one with a 300 or above number. Concern was expressed that this definition does not tell departments what criteria should be met to merit the 300+ number. The motion died for lack of a second. After much debate, the Committee agreed to recommend to the C&CC that an advanced (300-level and above) course be defined as one with junior standing and/or prerequisite coursework in the discipline.

Due to lack of time, further discussion of degree requirements was tabled until the next meeting. Members agreed to meet on Friday, December 5th at 9:00 a.m.

  4. New Business
    1. Review of C&CC Recommendations Concerning the Review - tabled

  5. Adjournment - The meeting was adjourned at 10:30 a.m.

Respectfully submitted,

Denise Mueller
