    The Committee returned to the order of the agenda.

  8. Old Business
    1. Proposal to Revise L&S Degree Requirements - Madeleine Velguth noted that several members expressed concern about the mission statement. They felt that graduate education, which is in part the responsibility of the College, should be included in the "bullet points" of the mission statement. The Committee agreed to have the following statements added:

      • to ensure that graduate students master their field of study;
      • to ensure that graduate students acquire the ability to conduct independent research.

      Faculty members had expressed concern about the writing skills of UWM students. Members of the Committee agreed that fostering English competency historically has been a problem. The writing-intensive requirement failed, in part, because it was highly structured and onerous for faculty members. After much discussion, the Committee agreed that the English writing requirement should be addressed, but there is not enough time to do so in the course of this review process. Members agreed that a task force should be created to discuss the problem.

      Madeleine noted that several faculty members had objected to dropping the requirement of a C grade in foreign language courses. She commented that French, German, and Spanish have agreed to require a C to move to the next course, and she asked that the C grade for the foreign language requirement be restored. The Committee approved the action. Madeleine commented that Ismael Márquez, chair of the Department of Spanish and Portuguese, was concerned that students who speak a language other than English within their home may be weak in grammar and writing in that language. Madeleine stated that Professor Márquez would like to see the term "native speaker" clarified. The Committee discussed this issue and agreed to the following statement as part of the language requirement:
      Native speakers of a language other than English who have graduated from a non-U.S. high school taught in a language other than English are exempt from this requirement.
      After a great deal of discussion about defining the international/world affairs requirement, it was moved and seconded to recommend that this requirement be eliminated. The motion was approved.

      The Committee discussed faculty members' suggestions for modifying the Math requirement for the B.S. degree. Members agreed to keep that recommendation as is.

      Members of the Committee discussed the proposed research requirement. There was concern that some departments would object to having to develop a specific course for this requirement in order to facilitate the exchange of ideas among students. Some departments currently enable students to conduct independent study/research projects, and they may provide alternative formats to allow students to exchange ideas. It was suggested that departments be given a great deal of flexibility in building this requirement into their majors. After much consideration, members agreed to discuss the research requirement further via email due to lack of time.

      The Committee discussed the definition of upper division courses and agreed not to change the recommendations. It was agreed that Kent Redding and Connie Jo would redraft the proposal to revise the degree requirements.

  9. Adjournment - The meeting was adjourned at 11:48 a.m.

Respectfully submitted,
