  4. Procedural Matters
    1. Brief Announcement Concerning L&S Committees (Connie Jo) - Connie Jo explained that it is difficult to find faculty members willing to serve on the L&S Faculty committees. She informed the Committee that the preference sheets were sent out early in an effort to recruit faculty members before they felt the end of the semester pressure. Connie explained that there are suppose to be two nominees for every position vacant. She said there were not enough faculty willing to serve to fill the slate of nominations. She told members that the Committee on Committees will make a proposal to the L&S Faculty to combine the APAC, GPC, and the C&CC into a Curriculum and Policies Committee. Charles Schuster expressed his concern that reducing the number of committees will impede faculty governance. After much discussion, Committee members agreed to talk to the chairs of their departments, asking them to urge faculty members to agree to be nominated for faculty committees.

  5. Old Business
    1. Recommendations of the L&S Degree Requirements Review Subcommittee - Kent Redding gave a brief summary of the survey. Genevieve McBride commended Kent for the excellent job he did as chair of the Subcommittee. Charles Schuster questioned the proposed competency requirement for foreign languages; he believes implementation will be expensive. Madeleine Velguth responded by saying that, in general, the languages still have capacity in the sections they offer. In addition, the new requirement should encourage students to continue their language studies in high school with the result that more students will score on the exam at the required level. In response to another question, she explained that retro credits would continue to be granted. After much discussion, members agreed that high school counselors should be given two years notice of the implementation of the new foreign language requirement.

Members discussed the substitution of a world affairs requirement for international and capstone requirements. After much discussion, the Committee agreed to discuss their viewpoints via email due to lack of time.
