- Call to Order - The chair, Doug Cherkauer, called the meeting to order at 1:05 p.m. in Holton Hall 241.
- Automatic Consent
- Minutes #7, 2003-2004 (April 19, 2004) - Donald Solomon would like to have it stated that the math position is a carryover; with that correction the minutes were approved as amended.
- Procedural Matters - None
- Old Business
- Review of Faculty Position Proposals - Doug Cherkauer asked members of the Committee if the Urban Studies proposal should be included in the recruitment requests. Stacey Oliker responded that she had spoken with the Associate Dean of Social Sciences concerning the position. She said that Eleanor Miller agreed that the position should be deferred to next year.
Mark Amsler, Edward Mabry, and Jeanne Schueller ranked the twelve positions for Humanities. Mark handed out copies of the list to members of the committee (copy filed with original minutes). He commented that their rankings were slightly different than Associate Dean Schuster's list. Stacey Oliker asked on what criteria they based their rankings. Mark explained that the positions were evaluated according to the needs of departments. He explained that some departments have requested the same positions for a number of years.
Douglas Cherkauer, Thomas Holme, and Donald Solomon reported a list of nine recruitment positions for the Natural Science. They ranked the first five the same as Associate Dean Mark Harris. The sixth position they listed was physics-theoretical. Doug commented that their seventh position, an animal ecologist, is important to the CES program. Their eighth-ranked position was the dynamical mathematician. The last position, an evolutionary biology geneticist, is one that they would like to see filled, but the startup costs are astronomical. Doug commented that space is an issue with this position as well. Ed Mabry asked whether the departments would be able to attract the faculty for the requested positions. Tom Holme and Doug Cherkauer responded saying that there was a strong pool for most areas. Doug expressed concern that the natural sciences continuously have been ignored in the past five years. He commented that professors have retired and replacement positions have not been filled.
Stacey Oliker, Swarnjit Arora, and Kathleen Dolan represented the Social Sciences. Kathleen Dolan handed out copies of their ranking of positions (copy filed with original minutes). She explained that they contacted members of departments to ask how they felt about Eleanor Miller's list of priorities. There were no negative responses from the departments. The subcommittee's first three positions were the same as the associate dean's selections. They listed Journalism and Mass Communication as their fourth position because of enrollment pressures. Stacey and Kathleen noted that History, Journalism and Mass Communication, Psychology, Political Science, and Sociology are showing significant increases in student enrollment. The twelve positions they ranked will provide faculty to the departments to meet the enrollment demands.
The Committee agreed to have a member of each subcommittee talk with the associate dean from each area to explain the Committee's priorities. The Committee requested that Doug submit a report to Dean Meadows outlining concerns relating to recruitment in the Natural Sciences. Committee members agreed to urge the deans to take a balanced approach, funding a minimum of six positions from each area.
- New Business - None
- Adjournment - Members of the Committee commended Doug Cherkauer for his work as chair of the Committee. Thomas Holme and Mark Amsler thanked Doug for his prompt responses to the items presented to the Committee. Members thanked Connie for her assistance on the committee. The meeting was adjourned at 2:25 pm.
