- Call to Order - The chair, Michael Gordon, called the meeting to order at 10:00 a.m. in Holton Hall 241
- Automatic Consent
- Approval of Minutes #5, 2002-2003 (March 28, 2003) - Kathleen Wheatley requested that "to waive the requirement of a C in 104 and accept a grade of C-" be added to V.A. after "Erl summarized the student's appeal." in the minutes. With that change, the minutes were approved unanimously as amended.
- Annual Report, 2002-2003 - Kathleen Wheatley noted that the report misstated the appeal for a waiver of a "C" grade required for the foreign language requirement. That section was amended to read:
"Request to waive the requirement of a C grade in Spanish 104 and to accept a C- to fulfill the foreign language requirement. Appeal denied."
The annual report as amended was approved unanimously.
- Procedural Matter
- Election of Co-Chair for 2003-2004 - The Committee unanimously elected Donald Solomon as co-chair for the 2003-2004 academic year.
- Old Business
- Policy Defining Students' Eligibility to Declare a Major when Requirements for Doing So Change - Connie Jo gave a brief summary explaining the L&S Faculty decision to send the policy back to the APAC for revision. Members of the Committee discussed the issues concerning the policy. The Committee agreed to have Connie Jo, Michael Gordon, and Tom O'Bryan draft a policy requiring students to declare a major before completing seventy-five credits. The Committee will review the policy draft at the next meeting.
- Policy on Extraordinary Accommodations - Robin Van Harpen of the Legal Affairs Office explained what led Legal Affairs to draft a policy on extraordinary accommodation. She indicated that a formal policy is needed to guard against lawsuits. She stated that students could not seek extraordinary accommodation unless they had a certified disability. Although she indicated that she supported granting extraordinary accommodation for English and math, she also made it clear that L&S may maintain its policy that these requirements are integral to the degree, but that policy must be approved in the context of inclusive, open hearings. In addition, Robin asked that the Committee develop a policy for appealing those requirements that were not considered integral to the integrity of the degree, and she provided an outline for members to use as a resource in developing an appeal policy. Members discussed the issue and agreed to invite Laurie Peterson from the Student Accessibility Center to provide them with information concerning learning disabilities before the Committee makes a decision about how to proceed on this matter.
- New Business - None
- Adjournment - Members of the Committee agreed to meet in three to four weeks. The meeting was adjourned at 11:37 a.m.
