- Extraordinary Accommodations for Students with Disabilities - Michael Gordon handed out copies of a document relating to the Boston University lawsuit concerning students with disabilities. He commented that it is impossible to satisfy the legal requirements for establishing a policy at the present time. This matter will have to be addressed by the new Academic Policies and Curriculum Committee in the next academic year. He asked how the Committee members would like to proceed with this issue. Members agreed to have Michael write a report outlining the Committee's actions to date in response to the Legal Affairs request and submit it to the new committee and the Dean.
Kathleen Wheatley asked if there was a test for students who have disabilities to identify specific cognitive difficulties in achieving the requirements for foreign language or math. Connie Jo responded that there was such a test. Richard O'Malley indicated he would have to know the specific characteristics of a disability in math in order to evaluate the kind of course that could substitute for the required course in math. After much discussion, members agreed the issue should be reviewed in the context of what is being done campus-wide, but L&S needs to set its own policy. Michael Gordon agreed to add this to his report. Connie said she thought it likely that the new AP&CC would refer the matter to a subcommittee that also had members who serve on the current APAC. Michael Gordon, Laura Fingerson, and Kathy Wheatley expressed a willingness to serve on such a subcommittee, and Richard O'Malley said he thought Donald Solomon also would be willing to serve.
- New Business - None
- Adjournment - Michael Gordon thanked Connie Jo for her assistance. Members commended and applauded Michael Gordon for his leadership on the committee.
Respectfully submitted,
Connie Jo
