  1. Call to Order - The Chair, Kristin Ruggiero, called the meeting to order at 10:35 a.m. in Holton Hall 241. Members of the Committee introduced themselves to one another.

  2. Automatic Consent
    1. Minutes #7, 2001-2002 (May 7, 2002) were approved as submitted.

    2. It was moved, seconded, and approved to suspend the agenda to accommodate the guests.

      V. C. Proposal to Modify the Requirements of the MPA/MUP Dual Degree - Doug Ihrke described the purpose of the proposal as two-fold: 1) to adjust the credits required in response to the increase in credits of a number of Bus Adm required courses; 2) to reduce redundancy between the MPA and MUP degree in order to reduce the number of credits required for the joint degree. Doug gave a brief summary of the significance of offering MPA/MUP as a jointly offered program. He explained the differences between the degrees and noted that acquiring both degrees could have substantial impact on a student's qualifications for managerial positions once he/she enters the workforce. Nancy Frank agreed that the dual degree provides a student with breadth of background; she encourages students to pursue that option. It was moved and seconded to recommend to the Dean approval of the proposal to the MPA/MUP dual degree. The motion was approved unanimously.

      V. A.B.   Proposals to Change the Geography M.A. and Ph.D. - Judith Kenny explained that the purpose of the two proposals was to add language requiring students to submit a quality, hard bound copy of their theses and dissertations to the department. After some discussion of whether the department and Graduate School standards of quality differed, it was moved and seconded to recommend to the Dean approval of the proposal to the change the Geography M.A. and Geography Ph.D. The motion was approved unanimously.

It was moved, seconded, and approved to return to the order of the agenda.

    3. Annual Report - approved as submitted.

If not, she will prepare for the next meeting a list of the current graduate certificate programs in L&S.
