University of Wisconsin-Milwaukee College of Letters and Science 2002-2003 Graduate Program Committee Meeting: Thursday, May 8, 2003, 11:00 a.m. Holton Hall 241 Minutes No. 5 Present: Swarnjit Arora, Jeffrey Hayes, Bruce Horner, Connie Jo (ex officio), Edward Mabry, Diane Reddy, Kristin Ruggiero Excused:   Douglas Cherkauer, Charles Schuster, Kyle Swanson, Charles Wimpee Guest: Denise Mueller Call to Order - The Chair, Kristin Ruggiero, called the meeting to order at 11:05 a.m. in Holton Hall 241. Automatic Consent Minutes #4, 2002-2003 (Thursday, April 10, 2003) were approved unanimously. Procedural Matters Election of Chair for 2003-2004 - Diane Reddy was elected unanimously and enthusiastically as chair for the 2003-2004 academic year. Old Business - None New Business Proposal to Modify Industrial Math Option of Math M.S. (on line at http://www.des.uwm.edu/intranet/opc/viewform.cfm?FormID=446) - It was moved and seconded to recommend to the Dean approval of the proposal to modify the Industrial Math option of the Math M.S. Swarnjit Arora asked that economics be included with physics, engineering, and business in Section V.2. Edward Mabry questioned the advisability of listing recommendations in the bulletin. Connie explained that students don't necessarily seek the assistance of an advisor and that putting the recommendations in the bulletin ensured students would understand the courses most useful to industry. Jeffrey Hayes responded that he felt the copy should be consistent with the Graduate School's Bulletin format. Connie suggested that the proposal be sent to the Graduate School for review. She requested approval of the removal of the "Recommendations" section if the Graduate School objects to it. Committee members agreed. The motion was approved. Adjournment - Kristin Ruggiero thanked members of the Committee, Connie Jo, and Denise Mueller for the wonderful job they did throughout the year. Members of the Committee expressed their appreciation to Kristin for serving as chair of the Committee.
