College of Letters and Science Faculty Document No. 644
April 3, 2003

Recommendation of the Affiliated Film Faculty and the L&S Course and Curriculum Committee to Change the Name of the Major in Film
(amendment of UWM Fac. Doc. 1072, Feb 16, 1978)
(underscored text is added)

Recommendation:

That the UWM Faculty Senate approve the change to the name of the Major in Film as indicated below in Section 1.1:
  1. PROGRAM IDENTIFICATION AND DESCRIPTION

  2. 1.1   Exact Designation of Proposed Program

Bachelor of Arts in Film Studies/Bachelor of Fine Arts in Film
Rationale:

Over the years, in order to distinguish between the Film major/degree offered in the Peck School of the Arts and the Film major in L&S, the use of the label Film Studies to refer to the L&S program has become commonplace. While the PSOA Film program has a focus on film production, the L&S Film major has a focus more in line with the study of film as a cultural phenomenon. Thus, the title Film Studies more accurately reflects the content of the L&S major, and this change implements officially what has been in practice for many years.
