College of Letters and Science Faculty Document No. 638b
April 3, 2003

Recommendation of the Academic Policies and Appeals Committee to Establish a Policy Defining Student's Eligibility to Declare a Major When Requirements for Doing So Change

Recommendation:

That the Faculty of the College of Letters and Science formally adopt a policy allowing any UWM student to follow any set of requirements for declaring a major in effect at UWM from the time s/he enrolls as a degree candidate at any University of Wisconsin System campus, as long as the student declares the major, or declares a premajor in that field, within five years of entry. A student who fails to declare his/her major or premajor within five years of the date of entry must complete the declaration requirements in effect at the time of his/her declaration.

Rationale:

This policy is an effort to balance the needs of students with those of departments. Students who enter the university and pursue their academic programs, including the declaration of a major, in a timely fashion will not be inconvenienced by a change in the requirements to declare the major. They will not have to lengthen their programs of study in order to complete new requirements for declaring the major that were not in effect when they entered.

At the same time, departments will not be required to continue, in perpetuity, to observe old sets of declaration requirements for students who have not made adequate progress toward the degree or who have not indicated their interest in a field in a timely fashion.
