College of Letters and Science Faculty Document No. 638
December 5, 2002

Recommendation of the Academic Policies and Appeals Committee to Establish a Policy Defining Student's Eligibility for a Set of Requirements When Those Requirements Change

Recommendation:

That the Faculty of the College of Letters and Science formally adopt a policy allowing any UWM student to follow any set of requirements for declaring or completing any major in effect at UWM from the time s/he enrolls as a degree candidate at any University of Wisconsin System campus.

Rationale:

This policy simply ratifies officially the policy that the College has followed unofficially for many years. Some departments would like to implement changes to their majors immediately, and to apply those changes to every student who has not yet formally declared a major. However, many students begin to fulfill major requirements (using either a current bulletin/catalog or checklists disseminated by advisors) as soon as they enroll in the UW System, and those students could be seriously inconvenienced by such an arrangement.

Because departments alter their major requirements for good reasons, it would of course be desirable if changes to major requirements could be implemented immediately for all students. But this would cause such severe problems of planning for individual students that retention of the current policy probably is the lesser of two evils.
