Women's Studies Certificate Program Committee Annual Report, 2001-2002
- The Women's Studies Certificate Program Committee is appointed annually by the Dean of the College of Letters and Science. The Certificate Program Committee is comprised of staff, students, and faculty members from a variety of departments throughout the university who are affiliated with the Women's Studies program.
- The Certificate Program Committee meets regularly with the Director and staff of the Center for Women's Studies during the academic year. The 2001-2002 Women's Studies Certificate Committee included the following members:
Assistant Professor Carrie Yang Costello, Sociology
Mary Ann Czarnezki, Instructor, Sociology
Professor Margaret Duncan, Human Kinetics
Professor Jane Gallop, English
Jordan Joseph, Undergraduate Student
Karen Keddy, Graduate Student, Architecture
Kathy Miller-Dillon, Ex officio, Assistant Director, Center for Women's Studies
Professor Jane Nardin, English
Professor David Pritchard, Journalism & Mass Communication
Michelle Schmidt, Graduate Student, History
Assistant Professor Karudapuram E. Supriya, Communication
Professor Merry Wiesner-Hanks, Ex officio, Director, Center for Women's Studies
- The Committee is responsible for developing policy for the program, advising students, encouraging the development of and identifying courses suitable for inclusion in the program's curriculum, and recommending changes in the curriculum. The Committee provides its recommendations and general advice to the Program Director, Merry Wiesner-Hanks, and Associate Dean Eleanor Miller.
- Over the past year, the Certificate Committee has participated in the following activities and/or addressed the following major issues:
- Advancement through the System of the "Preliminary Entitlement to Plan a Proposal" for the "institutional" major and minor in Women's Studies at UWM.
- Revision of the criteria used for cross-listing courses with Women's Studies.
- Administrative oversight of the March 2002 production of the musical documentary, Most Dangerous Women, which was co-sponsored by the Center for Women's Studies and presented in the UWM Fine Arts Recital Hall on March 6-7, 2002.
- Partial administrative oversight of the joint search with the Political Science department to hire UWM's very first permanent Women's Studies faculty member. The successful search resulted in the hire of Assistant Professor Christina Ewig, whose tenure home is in Political Science, with a 50% appointment in Women's Studies and a 50% appointment in Political Science.
- Partial administrative oversight of the search for a joint faculty hire with the Philosophy department. The joint search, which began in January 2002, continues. Last spring's search resulted in interviews with three candidates. Offers were made to two candidates, both of whom had accepted other offers by the time we approached them. The search was halted in May and, with the approval of the dean of L&S, has resumed this fall. The conditions of hire are the same as those applied to our joint hire with the Political Science department.
