Women's Studies Advisory Council Annual Report, 2001-2002

  1. The Women's Studies Advisory Council is appointed annually by the Dean of the College of Letters and Science. The Advisory Council is comprised of staff, students, and faculty members from a variety of departments throughout the university who are affiliated with the Women's Studies program.

  2. The Advisory Council meets regularly with the Director and staff of the Center for Women's Studies during the academic year. The 2001-2002 Women's Studies Advisory Council included the following members:

  3. Associate Professor Cheryl Ajirotutu, Anthropology
    Associate Professor Patrick Bellegarde-Smith, Africology
Traci Lee Clark, Graduate Student, English
Assistant Professor Margaret Crosby, Spanish and Portuguese
Alex Dye, Center for International Education
    Associate Professor Gwynne Kennedy, English
    Elizabeth Lehner, Undergraduate Student
Associate Professor Gwat-Yong Lie, Social Work
    Associate Professor Genevieve McBride, History
Kathy Miller-Dillon, Ex officio, Assistant Director, Center for Women's Studies
Cathy Seasholes, Director, Women's Resource Center
Associate Professor Eileen Sheil, Nursing, Health Maintenance
Professor Merry Wiesner-Hanks, Ex officio, Director, Center for Women's Studies

  4. The Advisory Council is an advisory body to the Director of the Center for Women's Studies and to the Associate Dean of Social Sciences in the College of Letters and Science in matters dealing with the development and operation of the Center for Women's Studies. The Center for Women's Studies exercises responsibility for coordinating, stimulating, and developing research and instruction in Women's Studies at UWM.

  5. Over the past year, the Advisory Council has participated in the following activities and/or addressed the following major issues:

    • Advancement through the System of the "Preliminary Entitlement to Plan a Proposal" for the "institutional" major and minor in Women's Studies at UWM.

    • Development of a series of "Women's Studies Brown Bag Lunches" which focused on feminist pedagogy.

    • Administrative oversight of the March 2002 production of the musical documentary, Most Dangerous Women, which was co-sponsored by the Center for Women's Studies and presented in the UWM Fine Arts Recital Hall on March 6-7, 2002.

    • Administrative oversight of the joint search with the Political Science department to hire UWM's very first permanent Women's Studies faculty member. The successful search resulted in the hire of Assistant Professor Christina Ewig, whose tenure home is in Political Science, with a 50% appointment in Women's Studies and a 50% appointment in Political Science.

    • Administrative oversight of the search for a joint faculty hire with the Philosophy department. The joint search, which began in January 2002, continues. Last spring's search resulted in interviews with three candidates. Offers were made to two candidates, both of whom had accepted other offers by the time we approached them. The search was halted in May and, with the approval of the dean of L&S, has resumed this fall. The conditions of hire are the same as those applied to our joint hire with the Political Science department.

    • Administrative oversight of the search and appointment process for the 2002-2003 Women's Studies Faculty Fellows.
