Certificate Program in Lesbian, Gay, Bisexual, and Transgender Studies Advisory Committee Annual Report, 2001-2002

During the academic year 2001-2002, the program coordinator answered calls, messages, and letters from students all over the country and abroad interested in undergraduate and graduate study, enrolled and advised students, updated the website, maintained contact with the Milwaukee LGBT Community Center, and responded to inquiries from the local community.

The required Introduction to LGBT Studies was offered again this year, as before, under the rubric of English 248, thanks to the generosity of the Department of English. The list of approved courses in the fall and spring semesters included courses from many L&S departments and several other schools.

The program co-sponsored following events:
  • the annual Gay and Lesbian Film Festival and
  • the symposium on "Local and Transcultural Identities and Communities in the LGBT Past and Present."
The speakers for the symposium were Marc Stein, Associate Professor of History at New York University, and James Green, Associate Professor of History at the University of California-Long Beach.

Patrick Bellegarde-Smith, Africology
Julie Carr, graduate student in English
Carrie Yang Costello, Sociology
Jeffrey Merrick, History, Chair
Patricia Stevens, Nursing
