Course and Curriculum Committee Annual Report, 2001-2002
Meetings
The Course and Curriculum Committee of the College of Letters and Science held twelve meetings during the academic year to carry out its functions as authorized by Letters and Science faculty document #168. The meetings were: September 4, 2001; September 25, 2001; October 16, 2001; November 6, 2001; November 27, 2001; December 20, 2001; January 25, 2002; February 15, 2002; March 8, 2002; March 29, 2002; April 19, 2002; and May 10, 2002.
Legislative Recommendations
The following recommendations were forwarded to the Dean for his action or referral to the Faculty.
- Approval of the proposal to modify the requirements for the Geography major.
- Approval of the proposal to change requirements for the Premedical Studies Certificate Program.
- Approval of the proposal to open the Ethnic Studies Certificate Program to post-baccalaureate students.
- Approval of the proposal for a Certificate Program in Urban Studies.
- Approval of the proposal to award undergraduate certificates to non-degree candidates.
- Approval of the proposal to modify the requirements of the Digital Arts and Culture program.
- Approval of the proposal to add Geography 416-520 to Courses Approved to Count as Advanced Natural Science for the L&S BS Degree.
- Approval of the proposal to modify the requirements of the Applied Mathematics and Physics degree program.
- Approval of a report to be sent to the Dean concerning the College's readiness to meet the Regents' directive for on-line learning.
- Approval of the proposal to modify the requirements of the Certificate Program in Forensic Science.
- Approval of the proposal to modify the requirements of the Anthropology major.
- Approval of the proposal to modify the requirements of the Journalism and Mass Communication major/Print Journalism submajor.
- Approval of the proposal to modify the requirements of the major and minor in Spanish.
- Approval of the proposal to modify the requirements of the Comparative Study of Religion major.
- Approval of the proposal to modify the Certificate in Celtic Studies.
- Approval of a second proposal to modify the requirements of the major and minor in Spanish.
- Approval of a second proposal to modify the requirements of the Comparative Study of Religion major.
- Approval of a second proposal to modify the Certificate in Celtic Studies.
- Approval of the proposal to modify the requirements of the Physics major.
- Approval of the proposal to open the Certificate Program in Middle Eastern and North African Studies to post-baccalaureate students.
- Approval of the proposal to modify the requirements of the Certificate Program in Scandinavian Studies.
- Approval of Communication 245-641, Current Topics in Organizational Communication, "International Mediation" subtitle for the International requirement.
- Approval of Geosciences 475 with the modification that it does not count toward the major.
- Approval of a request for an Entitlement to Plan a Bachelor of Arts Degree in Applied Mathematics and Computer Science.
- Approval of proposal to change the prerequisite GPA for Psychology 325.
- Approval of a procedure for conducting the review of the L&S degree requirements implemented in Fall, 1998.
- Approval of the proposal to alter the capstone requirement for Atmospheric Sciences major.
- Approval of request for an Entitlement to Plan a Bachelor of Arts Degree in Mathematical Sciences, Business, and Economics.
- Approval of request for Authorization to Implement a Bachelor of Science Degree in Applied Mathematics and Computer Science.
- Approval of a recommendation to establish a minor in Portuguese.

Procedural Matters
- Professor Mike Allen was elected as Co-Chair for 2001-02 academic year.
- Sub-committee chairs were elected: Jennifer Watson for HU; Genevieve McBride for SS; Vince Cronin for NS.
- Appointments to the W-I subcommittee were deferred.
- Congratulations to Vince Cronin for winning the Martine Meyer Teaching Award.
- Campbell Tatham was elected Chair for 2002-2003.
- The 2000-2001 Annual Report was approved as submitted.
- Committee actions listed in the 2001 Summer Report were approved and are included in the course summaries of this report.
