  5. Old Business
    1. L&S Degree Review Survey - Cam Tatham asked how the Committee arrived at the idea of a survey and the specific questions for the evaluation of the degree. The members of the Committee explained that the primary purpose was to solicit faculty views on what should constitute an L&S degree. Cam pointed out changes that the Dean had made to the survey and asked where the authority to conduct the review lies. Connie noted that the Committee makes recommendations to the Dean; ultimately, the Dean will make the final decision on how the review will be done. Members discussed each of the Dean's changes. In the end, they decided to ask the Dean to reconsider several items:

      Part I
      • change ";Critical Reasoning"; to "Critical Thinking;"
      • add a section to Part I that will permit faculty members to express their views on how effectively the College is imparting to students those elements that are important to an L&S degree;
      • do not use italics for Great Books, Service Learning, and Writing Across the Curriculum, and add an explanation for each of these that says the question is not about a particular program currently at UWM;
      • change "Select and Complete" a major to "Declare and Complete."

      Part II
      • place the word "why" after each choice available in these questions;

      Part III
      • add language to make it clear that the section on the mission statement addresses a broader issue than the current undergraduate degree requirements.

      Part IV
      • invite respondents to identify themselves if they wish to receive "an individual response."

      Committee members discussed the Dean's idea of doing the survey via the web. Members feel that the Dean should be urged to send paper versions of the survey to each faculty member. Numbered surveys would protect against multiple votes from individuals. In addition, given the age of (and problems with) some faculty members' computers, completing a survey on the web can be very discouraging. Members believe that more people will respond to a paper version. Connie was asked to communicate these concerns to the Dean.

  6. New Business
    1. Natural Sciences - None
    2. Social
      1. CAR Form - It was moved, seconded, and approved to recommend to the Dean approval of the following CAR form:
      2. Sociol 305     Sociology of Sport (new)
    3. Humanities - None

  7. The meeting was adjourned at 10:32 a.m.
