Robin Pickering-Iazzi was present to answer questions. The motion was approved.
VI.C.1. Request for an Entitlement to Plan a Major in Microbiology It was moved and seconded to recommend to the Dean approval of the request for an entitlement to plan a major in microbiology. Mary Lynne Collins gave a brief summary and answered questions from members of the Committee. She stressed that Biological Sciences is losing students to other campuses because UWM does not offer a major in microbiology. The motion was approved.

It was moved, seconded, and approved to return to the order of the agenda.

  5. Old Business
    1. Summary of Degree Requirements Survey Comments - Genevieve McBride gave a brief description of the survey to new members on the Committee. She expressed deep gratitude to Connie for many hours she spent developing the survey. Genevieve asked Connie to summarize the survey comments. Connie responded that faculty members' comments suggested strong support for eliminating the capstone requirement. Many felt it should be built into the majors rather than into the general College requirements. Madeleine Velguth responded that in small departments it is difficult to meet this requirement. She explained that in her department seniors have to take an independent study course to meet the capstone requirement. Genni indicated that she had heard support for keeping the capstone requirement in a revised form.

Connie stated that there was strong support for students to declare a major earlier. She commented that the English and Math requirements were a major issue of concern. Most faculty members who commented felt that the writing and math skills were poor among students; these are crucial skills needed when entering the workforce. Connie commented that there is strong opposition to counting Sport/Rec and Military Science courses toward the degree.

Tatham questioned Charles Schuster concerning the seminar requirement. Chuck responded that due to the budget crisis fewer freshman seminar courses were being offered. He stated that the fall semester has approximately 30 seminar courses. Connie noted that a recommendation to the Faculty to suspend the seminar requirement was defeated. She stated that the international requirement was a controversial issue. Most individuals who commented felt it needed to be redefined to deal with current global issues. The weakness of the foreign language requirement was noted; a majority of students have fulfilled this requirement in high school.

Allen, who has worked diligently with Connie on the survey, commented that the survey indicates strong support for basic skills, but there is not a strong consensus on the importance of the learning environments. Christopher De Sousa suggested that departments look at the mission statement as a guideline to developing course syllabi to see if they are addressing the College's goals. Connie suggested that a syllabus outline that lists the College's goals could be useful. Cam asked that the subcommittee meet during the summer, if possible, so when the Committee meets in the fall highlights of the survey could be discussed. Sarah Hoot, Genevieve McBride, and Madeleine Velguth agreed to serve on the subcommittee representing the C&CC. Connie will send to them the names of other faculty members who were suggested for this committee last year, and they will make recommendations to the Dean. Cam inquired if the survey comments could be put on the web. Connie responded that she would arrange for that to happen. Cam thanked Mike Allen and Connie for their hard work.

  6. New Business
    1. Social Sciences
      1. Proposal to Modify the Requirements of the Law Studies Option of the Political Science Major - view on web at http://www.des.uwm.edu/intranet/Opc/viewStep.cfm=448 - It was moved and seconded to recommend to the Dean approval of changes to the law studies option of the political science major. Terry Nardin provided a brief explanation of the changes. The motion was approved unanimously.

      2. Italian 508   Italian Immersion (new)
