  1. Call to Order - Professor Cam Tatham, Chair of the Committee, called the meeting to order at 4:02 p.m. in Holton 241. Connie Jo announced that the following CAR forms were being withdrawn temporarily from the agenda:

  6. A motion to suspend the agenda in order to accommodate the guests was made, seconded, and approved.

    VI.A.4.     Recommendation to Establish a Certificate in Ancient Mediterranean Studies
    It was moved and seconded to recommend to the Dean approval of the Certificate. Richard Monti answered questions about the program. The motion was approved unanimously.

    VI.A.1. CAR Forms
    It was moved and seconded to recommend to the Dean approval of the following CAR:
    ESL 120   Grammar and Editing in English as a Second Language (cr, descr)
    Kathy Kaye answered questions about the requested changes. Members of the Committee suggested a change to the description to include "grammar and editing." With that change, the motion was approved.

    It was moved and seconded to recommend to the Dean approval of the following CAR:
    ESL 130   Pronunciation in English as a Second Language (new)
    Kathy Kaye answered questions about the course. The motion was approved.

    The Committee agreed to an addition to the agenda.

    It was moved and seconded to recommend to the Dean approval of the following CAR:
    Ethnic 133   Celtic Crossings: Overview of the History and Cultures of the Celtic World (new; GER-HU)

    Nancy Walczyk, who will coordinate faculty lectures for the course, responded to questions. The motion was approved.

    V.A.1.   CAR Form
    It was moved and seconded to recommend to the Dean approval of the following CAR:
    Linguis 212   Language and Gender (new; GER-SS)
    Greg Iverson and Bozena Tieszen answered questions about the course. The motion was approved.

    VI.A.1.   CAR Form
    It was moved and seconded to recommend to the Dean approval of the following CAR:
    Philos 358   Action, Will, and Freedom (new)
    Margaret Atherton responded to questions concerning the course. The motion was approved.

    VI.A.2.   Recommendation to Add Options for Completing the Capstone and Honors Requirements in the Philosophy Major
    It was moved and seconded to recommend to the Dean approval of the requested changes. Margaret Atherton explained the department's proposal. The motion was approved.

    VI.A.3.   Proposal to Eliminate Options for Completing the Capstone Requirement in the Communication Major
    It was moved and seconded to recommend to the Dean approval of this proposal. Kerry Egdorf responded to questions about the proposal. The motion was approved.

    It was moved, seconded, and approved to return to the order of the agenda.
