- CAR Forms - Members of the Committee questioned Elihu Lubkin concerning two proposed Physics courses. Cam Tatham questioned the grading in Physics 333 and asked that it be more clearly defined for students. Connie indicated she would prepare a revised description of the grading policy. Cam also recommended that the prerequisites in both courses be modified. The Committee agreed that Physics 333 should state that familiarity with matrices is recommended. Physics 633 will indicate that familiarity with calculus is recommended. Madeleine Velguth and Charles Schuster questioned the title and description of Physics 633. Charles Schuster suggested that the course follow the same format as other Physics courses listed in the catalog, but an acceptable alternative was not proposed. Madeleine Velguth suggested changing the title to "Entropy, Thermodynamics, Statistical Mechanics: A Logical Progression," and the Committee concurred. With those changes, it was moved, seconded, and approved to recommend to the Dean approval of the following CAR forms:
| Physics 333 |
A Historical Thread through Twentieth-Century Physics (new) |

There were questions about grading, and a page of the syllabus was missing. It was moved, seconded, and approved to table the proposal and to request that a member of the department attend the next meeting.
It was moved, seconded, and approved to suspend the agenda to accommodate the guest.
Richard Meadows addressed the Committee concerning the budget crisis. He indicated that it might be necessary to suspend the Freshman Seminar Program. If this should become necessary, he stated that it would be difficult for students to meet the L&S degree's seminar requirement. Dean Meadows explained that the budget reduction for the university will be extensive. Eliminating the seminar program would cut approximately $200,000 from the budget by allowing faculty to teach courses otherwise staffed by ad hoc instructors. He indicated that he would like to do a comprehensive review of the program prior to making a decision about its future, but time is limited and cuts need to be made now. Sarah Hoot asked if the senior seminar capstone also would be eliminated. Connie stated that capstone courses would not be affected. Cam Tatham questioned whether it was the role of this committee to debate a proposal to suspend the seminar requirements. The Committee has been asked to recommend suspension of seminar requirements IF the Freshman Seminar Program is cut. Connie explained if the budget cuts were less than the university is anticipating that there is a possibility that the proposal will not go into effect. It was moved, seconded, and approved to recommend to the Faculty that the Seminar requirement be suspended if it became necessary to suspend or cut the Freshman Seminar Program.
It was moved, seconded, and approved to return to the order of business.
