  1. Call to Order - The chair, Stacey Oliker, called the meeting to order at 11:10 a.m. in HLT 190. The meeting, originally scheduled in HLT 241, was moved to provide access to a chalkboard.

    1. Minutes #8 (June 19, 2003) were approved unanimously.

  3. Procedural Matters - None

  4. Old Business
    1. Review of Position Requests - Stacey Oliker asked members of the Committee to briefly summarize the associate deans' recommendations for members who were absent from the previous meeting. Gerald Bergtrom recapped the position requests that Associate Deans Harris and Schuster felt were priorities in Natural Sciences and Humanities. Swarnjit Arora gave a brief summary of Associate Dean Miller's priorities in the Social Sciences. Committee members had a long discussion about how to proceed. They agreed to recommend thirty positions to the dean. A representative of each subcommittee (HU, NS, SS) reported the subcommittee recommendations. The Committee voted unanimously to recommend the following positions:

      History (1) - Renaissance/Baroque
      Communication (1) -   Interpersonal Communication with emphasis in Conflict/Mediation
      English (1) - 18th Century Literature & Culture
      Film (1) - Film History, Criticism, & Theory
      FLL (2) - German (Interest in Translation) & Linguistics (combined into one position)
      Arabic and Islamic Culture
      FICL (2) - Replacement for Rachel Skalitzky in Comparative Literature
      Replacement for Roy Arthur Swanson in Comparative Literature
      Spanish & Portuguese (2) -   Senior hire in Modern Penisular Literature and Culture
      Spanish Sociolinguistics
         
      Natural Sciences
      Biological Sciences (3) - Eukaryotic Developmental Biologist/Geneticist
      Evolutionary Population Geneticist
      Microbial Genomicist
      In addition the Committee recommended that the essential instrument and lab technicians be hired.
      Chemistry (2) -   Experimental Physical Chemist
      Organic Chemist
      Geosciences (2) - Paleontologist
      Geochemist
      Mathematical Sciences (2) -   Statistics
      Atmospheric Sciences/Climate Dynamic
      Physics (2) - Experimental Physicist - Optics/Biophysics
      Theoretical Particle Physicist
         
      Social Sciences
      American Indian Studies (1) -   Director
      Anthropology (1) - Biological Anthropology - Osteology/Forensic Anthropology
      Economics (1) - Economics of International Finance
      Geography (1) - Economic Geography
      History (1) - Modern European History
      JMC (2) - Print Journalism (career-track lecturer)
      Mass Communication and Persuasion
      Political Science (1) - Judicial Behavior/Constitutional Law
      Psychology (1) - Experimental Health Psychology
      Urban Studies (1) - Maier position

      Committee members agreed that a few of the remaining positions should have a higher priority if we are able to hire for more than thirty positions. In no particular order, those positions are:

      Bio Sci (1) - Molecular Environmental Physiologist
      Chem (1) - Analytical Chemist
      Art Hist (1) - Contemporary Art
      English (1) - US Latino/a Literatures in English - in consultation with Spanish and Portuguese

      Stacey will draft a memo to the dean and circulate it to committee members.

  6. Adjournment - The meeting was adjourned at 12:50 p.m.
