University of Wisconsin-Milwaukee College of Letters and Science 2002-2003 Academic Planning Committee Meeting: Friday, February 7, 2003, 3:15 p.m. Holton Hall 241 Minutes No. 4 Present: Swarnjit Arora, Margaret Atherton, Gerry Bergtrom, Doug Cherkauer, Chris De Sousa, Tom Holme, Pat Kissinger, Erl Olfe, Stacey Oliker, Jeanne Schueller, Gabrielle Verdier Excused: Connie Jo, Richard Meadows Call to Order – The Chair, Stacey Oliker, called the meeting to order at 3:19 p.m. in HLT 241. Automatic Consent Minutes #3, 2002-2003 (December 6, 2002) were approved unanimously as submitted. Procedural Matters - none Old Business - none New Business Recommendations for Budget Cuts - Dean Richard Meadows gave the committee members background information on the budget situation and the pressing need to cut expenditures to achieve a balanced budget. He shared with the members the Provost's guidelines for identify budget savings. We will not know the size of the problem until the Governor delivers his budget message on February 18, but we have been asked to develop contingency plans for a 5% and a 10% cut for 2003-2004. The governor is likely to propose a tuition increase, perhaps as high as 8%. Dean Meadows offered the APC members the options of developing their own plan for the 5 and 10% cuts or reacting to a plan developed by L&S Administration. Dean Meadows then outlined briefly some of the ideas for cutting expenditures that have been suggested. Swarnjit Arora moved (Margaret Atherton seconded) that the Committee respond to proposals developed by the Administration rather than develop its own set of proposals. The motion was approved unanimously. The Dean indicated that he would try to present a plan to the Committee within the next month.
