- Call to Order - The chair, Robert Jeske, called the meeting to order at 9:35 a.m. in Holton Hall 241.
- Automatic Consent - There were no objections to the automatic consent items; they stand approved.
- Minutes #4, 2000-2001 (April 11, 2000)
- Annual Report, 2000-2001
- Procedural Matters
- Election of Co-Chair - Kristin Ruggiero was elected unanimously as co-chair for 2001-2002.
- Schedule of Fall Meetings - The Committee agreed to meet November 15th and December 13th.
- Procedures for Routine Changes (forms on-line) - Committee members agreed to review program change forms on-line. If anyone has concerns about any of the items, s/he will make a copy of the document to bring to the meeting.
- Review Charter (especially appointments to Grad School Comms) - After a brief discussion of the charter, focusing in particular on the Committee's charge to recommend members for Graduate School committees, members agreed they would like to have more time to consider possible changes to the charter. This will be an item of Old Business on the agenda of the next meeting.
- Old Business None
It was moved, seconded, and approved to add a new item (D. Changes to the M.A. in Mass Communication) to New Business and to change the order of the agenda to consider this item first in order to accommodate the Committee's guest. (Note: The proposal had been distributed to committee members several days before the meeting.)
Connie Jo distributed a revised version of the JMC proposal to committee members. It was moved and seconded to recommend to the Dean approval of the JMC proposal. Discussion focused on three issues:
- the elimination of the comprehensive admission with deficiencies;
- the elimination of the comprehensive exam option;
- the requirement of a 3.4 GPA to graduate with no mechanism for screening students at an earlier point in their studies for problems suggesting success might elude them.
Pritchard indicated he would rewrite the justifications for the first two items. He also said he planned to discuss with the associate dean the implementation of a required gpa to continue in the program after 12 credit are earned. It was moved, seconded, and approved to table the proposal.
It was moved, seconded, and approved to return to the order of the agenda.
- New Business
- Recommendation to modify the requirements of the MA/Ms in Geography - It was moved, seconded, and approved to table the proposal and to request that a representative of the Department attend the next meeting.
- Recommendation to change the name of the Master's in Liberal Studies - It was moved, seconded, and approved unanimously to recommend to the Dean approval of the proposal to change the name of the Master's in Liberal Studies.
- Recommendation to modify admission requirements of the Graduate Certificate in International Technical Communication - It was moved, seconded and approved unanimously to recommend to the Dean approval of the proposal to modify admission requirements of the Graduate Certificate in International Technical Communication.
- Recommendation to modify admission requirements of the Journalism and Mass Communication Graduate Program See above.
- Adjournment - The meeting was adjourned at 10:30 a.m.
