Latin American and Caribbean Studies Certificate Program Advisory Committee
Annual Report 2000-2001


2000-01 Committee Members: Helena Curtain, Howard Handelman, Julio Rodriguez-Luis, William Washabaugh (chair), Kristin Ruggiero (ex officio)

Student Enrollment:
Total students enrolled in program as of August 31, 2001: 14
New students enrolled between Sept. 2000 and Aug 2001: 7
Graduated: Dec 2000(2) / May 2001 (2)

Majors Include:
L&S: Anthropology, Communications, History, International Studies, Journalism and Mass Communication, Political Science, and Spanish

Promotion:
Annual mailing to Spanish and IS majors (February 2001)
Better visibility on CLACS web site (www.uwm.edu/Dept/CLACS/)

Improvement Still Needed:
Better and more regularized communication between the LACS Certificate and L&S Advising in order to know when students have graduated with the certificate.

Approved Changes:
  • Name Change to Certificate in Latin American and Caribbean Studies (12-21-00)
  • Certificate opened to post-baccalaureate students (12-21-00)
  • Reinstatement of 522 Curricular Area Code: Latin American and Caribbean Studies (6-18-01)
Expansion:
Design of a Graduate Certificate in Latin American and Caribbean Studies (in development)
